Loose Sheets. Zustand: Very Good +. Manuscript Letter. 20 pp., long unlined sheets, entirely handwritten in ink. Annotated at top by Will Durant, "Corrections for Story of Civ. -Part I / By M. N. Saha, Prof. of Physics, Univ. of Allahabad." Text is approximately 25- 35 lines per page, and consists entirely of important corrections by Saha to sections on India in "Our Oriental Civilization" (by Durant). Durant has also written "Corrections for Story of Civ." in pencil, in a later hand, across the back of the last page. M. N. Saha, Bengali astrophysicist, 1893-1956, whose discovery at age 25 of the cause of spectral lines (the ionization formula) was of fundamental importance in astrophysics, both theoretically and because it allowed for calculations of the temperature, pressure, etc. of the interiors of stars. Saha became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1927. He founded the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Calcutta, and helped found India's first cyclotron in 1950. He was active politically and socially, and founded the magazine "Science & Culture", also serving in Parliament after 1952. Saha's letters themselves are now largely in the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi.…
