Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Rogers, Philip R (illustrator). Neuware - 'All across the nation, such a strange vibration.'Word spread across the United States. Young Americans were drawn to a revolutionary underground youth subculture that was developing in an area of San Francisco, California known as Haight/Ashbury. It was 1967 and youths cast off their conservative social values and 'dropped out' to form their own world, one of peace, love and tranquility. It became known as 'The Summer of Love'. They sought utopia in a world of turmoil including a horrific war in Vietnam. They were known as Hippies. Sexual and social inhibitions were dropped; politics, music, drugs and free love were the order of the day. Hells Angels and the Black Panther Party operated freely. Some say if you were there and you remember it, you weren't there! KATHERINE RHODES was there and lived through that crazy, hazy period. A freak accident hurls her back through time to 1967 and into her own 20 year old hippie body. Unbelievable Maybe. But she's here and she has the opportunity to re-live those times a little more clearly and a lot more experienced. The Human Be-In, Monterey Pop Festival and the Gathering of the Tribes. Her beloved brother was killed in the Vietnam War. Could she prevent that Could she avoid the terrible relationship and doomed marriage she got herself into Join KATHERINE (Katie) as she re-lives the world famous 1967 Summer of Love with her friends MOONBEAM and FROG. You will meet JANIS JOPLIN, CARLOS SANTANA, CHARLES MANSON and many more. Oh, and be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.

The origin, evolution, and environmental impact of large igneous provinces (LIPs) represents a topic of high scientific importance because the magmatism associated with these features cannot be directly related to plate tectonics, and because the eruption of flood basalts may have global environmental consequences. Oceanic LIPs are even more poorly understood due to their relative inaccessibility. This volume takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding LIP origin, evolution, and environmental impact in ocean basins. Papers that focus on plate tectonic reconstructions, petrologic and geophysical investigations of various LIPs, and sedimentological and micropaleontological evidence of syn-LIP sediments are presented. Precious materials and data from dredging cruises and scientific ocean drilling expeditions have made this volume possible.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This document is the result of a conference on 'Biological Monitoring of Metals' held in Rochester, June 2-6, 1986, organized jointly by the Environmental Health Sciences Center of the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Rochester, NY, and the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals within the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) at the Karolinska Institute and the National (Swedish) Institute of Environmental Medicine and the University of Umea, Sweden. The aim of the Conference was to define and evaluate the scientific basis for the biological monitoring of metals. The conference was co-sponsored by the World Health Organization through its International Program on Chemical Safety and received substantial encouragement and support from the Swedish Work Environmental Fund and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This was the second conference organized jointly by the Scientific Committee on the Toxicology of Metals and The Toxicology Division of the University of Rochester. The previous joint conference was held in 1982 on the Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity of Metals. In addition, conferences have been organized by each group (see Appendices A and B). Several of these conferences are specially relevant to the topic of the current conference. These include the joint conference mentioned above and the conferences on dose-effect and dose-response relationship held in Tokyo in 1974 and on accumulation of metals held in Buenos Aires in 1972.

CONFIDENTIAL marking crossed through and stamped UNCLASSIFIED with declassification stamp on front page. Tis study was conducted at the Waterways Experiment Station for the Office, Chief of Engineers, Department of the Army, as a task under Research and development Project 8S12-959002, "Nuclear Weapons effects on Structures, Terrain, and Waterways (U)." It was accomplished during the period August 1959 through November 1960 by personnel of the Special Investigations Section, Hydraulics Division, U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiments Station. This study was related to the buried, concrete-arch structures of Project 3.1 tested during Operation PLUMBOB in 1957. This rare surviving draft copy is valuable both for the information contained within it and also as a baseline to compare the final published version to, to identify what may have changed and to surmised as to why changes may have occurred. Operation Plumbbob was a series of nuclear tests that were conducted between May 28 and October 7, 1957, at the Nevada Test Site, following Project 57, and preceding Project 58/58A. The operation consisted of 29 explosions, of which only two did not produce any nuclear yield. Twenty-one laboratories and government agencies were involved. While most Operation Plumbbob tests contributed to the development of warheads for intercontinental and intermediate range missiles, they also tested air defense and anti-submarine warheads with smaller yields. They included 43 military effects tests on civil and military structures, radiation and bio-medical studies, and aircraft structural tests. Operation Plumbbob had the tallest tower tests to date in the U.S. nuclear testing program as well as high-altitude balloon tests. One nuclear test involved the largest troop maneuver ever associated with U.S. nuclear testing. Approximately 18,000 members of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines participated in exercises Desert Rock VII and VIII during Operation Plumbbob. The military was interested in knowing how the average foot-soldier would stand up, physically and psychologically, to the rigors of the tactical nuclear battlefield. Almost 1,200 pigs were subjected to bio-medical experiments and blast-effects studies during Operation Plumbbob. On shot Priscilla (37 kt), 719 pigs were used in various experiments on Frenchman Flat. Some pigs were placed in elevated cages and provided with suits made of different materials, to test which materials provided best protection from the thermal radiation. As shown and reported in the PBS documentary Dark Circle, the pigs survived, but with third-degree burns to 80% of their bodies.[2] Other pigs were placed in pens behind large sheets of glass at measured distances from the hypocenter to test the effects of flying debris on living targets. Studies were conducted of radioactive contamination and fallout from a simulated accidental detonation of a weapon, and projects concerning earth motion, blast loading and neutron output were carried out. Nuclear weapons safety experiments were conducted to study the possibility of a nuclear weapon detonation during an accident. On July 26, 1957, a safety experiment, Pascal-A, was detonated in an unstemmed hole at the Nevada Test Site, becoming the first underground shaft nuclear test. The knowledge gained provided data to prevent nuclear yields in case of accidental detonationsfor example, in a plane crash. The Rainier shot, conducted September 19, 1957, was the first fully contained underground nuclear test, meaning that no fission products were vented into the atmosphere. This test of 1.7 kt could be detected around the world by seismologists using ordinary seismic instruments. The Rainier tes.
