In den WarenkorbVictoria County History, Cambridgeshire, Volume 10, describes how, on the death in 1812 of Admiral Sir Charles Cotton, Landwade Manor 'passed to his son Sir St. Vincent Cotton who came of age in 1822. In 1850 he sold Landwade to Alexander Cotton, probably his younger brother (b. 1804). Landwade manor was sold in 1854, and the Co…tton family's association with the parish ended.' The present item is from the papers of Sir Richard Harington (1835-1911) of Ridlington, 11th Baronet, who has written at the head of the packet title: 'Property of the late Alexander Cotton father of Alice who married first Revd. Charles Harington & 2ndly Robert Biscoe'. (Dates: Alexander Cotton, ?; Alice Cotton, 1845-1921; Rev. Charles Harington, 1837-1868; Major Robert Biscoe of Quendon Court, 1839-1905.) 8pp., folio, with two excellent large fold-out maps by the London lithographers C. F. Kell & Son: 'Plan of the Landwade Hall Estate' (coloured in green and brown); and a triple 'Plan of Lot 5. In the Parish of Exning', 'Plan of Lot 4. in the Parish of Burwell' and 'Plan of Lots 2 & 3. in the Parish of Burwell' (coloured in blue, green, yellow and pink). In fair condition on aged and worn paper, with spotting to final leaf (maps unmarked). Folded into the conventional packet. The full title reads: 'Within three miles of Newmarket. In the Parishes of Exning, Landwade, Fordham & Burwell. | Particulars and Conditions of Sale of the Freehold Landed Estate known as "Landwade Hall," which contains 484a. 0r. 11p. of excellent Arable, Pasture and Wood Land, divided into Three Farms, with suitable Houses, Homesteads, and Five Cottages; The fine Arbitrary Manors, of Exning otherwise Cotton's Hall and Coggeshall in Exning; and four detached Fields of Accommodation Land, containing together 46a. 2r. 4p., for Sale by Auction, by Mr. Cheffins On Friday, June 8th, 1900, At the Auction Mart, Tokenhouse Yard, London, E.C., at Two o'Clock precisely, In Six Lots, (unless previously disposed of by private treaty).
