Besitzvermerk (Ex libris). -- Der dritte Band vereinigt die Neurosenlehren, insbesondere in ihren klassischen Formen, sowie die verschiedenen Psychotherapien. Zwar handelt es sich fast ausschließlich um Übersetzungen, vielleicht macht der Band aber gerade dadurch sichtbar, welch enge Verquickung sich über mehrere Jahrzehnte zwischen deutschen und amerikanischen Psychiatrietraditionen gebildet hatte. Nie vorher hatte während so langer Zeit die dynamische Psychiatrie, wie Ellenberger sie genannt hat, so sehr im Mittelpunkt des Interesses gestanden wie nach dem 2. Weltkrieg, nachdem die USA ihren führenden Platz in der Psychiatrie der Welt eingenommen hatten, ln dieser Zeit wurden sie am tatkräftigsten von den aus Hitler-Deutschland vertriebenen Psychiatern unterstützt. -- Wenn man vom Standpunkt der Gegenwart aus die Geschichte und Theorien der einzelnen dynamischen Psychiatrieschulen liest, fällt einem ihre Ähnlichkeit untereinander vielleicht mehr auf als die Unterschiede, obwohl gerade diese in ihrer Entstehungszeit zu erbitterten und auch ins Persönliche gehenden Auseinandersetzungen geführt hatten. Jede neue Generation von Psychotherapeuten muß sich diese Stoffe aber wieder neu aneignen, was vor allem wegen der ungeheuer verzweigten Primärliteratur schwer ist. -- Zwar hat jede Theorie auch ihre eigene Behandlungsstrategie und -technik und die dazugehörige Ausbildung hervorgebracht, aber das Gebiet der Therapie ist eher noch vielfältiger als das der Theorie. Es wird heute vom Nervenarzt erwartet, daß er nicht nur mit einer einzigen Behandlungstechnik vertraut ist und sich allein darauf stützt, sondern daß er mehrere oder viele beherrscht. Es gibt keine Hinweise dafür, daß eine einzige Technik grundsätzlich und für alle Zwecke besser sei als alle anderen - oder auch daß es nur einen Therapeutentyp gibt. -- Der Schwerpunkt des wissenschaftlichen Interesses der Psychiatrie hat sich in den letzten zehn Jahren zweifellos von den psychodynamischen Hintergründen seelischen Krankseins wegverlagert zur Symptomatologie und Klassifikation der psychiatrischen Krankheitsbilder, wie sie in Band 1 dargestellt wurden. Dies steht allerdings in einem deutlichen Gegensatz zu den praktischen Bedürfnissen der nervenärztlichen Tätigkeit, in welcher die psychotherapeutische Arbeit in allen ihren Aspekten während des gleichen Zeitraums einen ständig weiter zunehmenden Raum eingenommen hat. Den daraus resultierenden Informa tionsbedürfnissen versucht dieser Band entgegenzukommen. Es ist aber auch nicht zu verkennen, daß vieles vom psychodynamischen Denken, welches früher fachinternen Diskussionen überlassen war, inzwischen Allgemeingut der Kultur geworden ist und dort vielleicht sogar ein lebendigeres Leben führt als in der Medizin selbst, auf welcher immer gleichzeitig die Bürde einer Beherrschung einer komplizierter werdenden Technik und der täglichen Krankenversorgung lastet. Für alle nicht-ärztlichen Psychotherapeuten möchte dieser Band ebenfalls Hilfen vermitteln. -- Die an sich thematisch zusammengehörigen Bände 3 und 4 mußten aus technischen Gründen getrennt werden, weil der Umfang dies erforderte. Auch dies zeigt noch einmal, wie groß der Stoff ist, der auf diesem Gebiet heute von jedem Nervenarzt bewältigt werden muß. -- Im einzelnen stellt der Band vor: zuerst die Freudsche Schule und die klassische Psychoanalyse als dem Mutterboden, aus dem sich alles andere entwickelt hat. Dem folgen die Schulen von Alfred Adler, Carl Gustav Jung, Adolf Meyer (der erst mit Spätwirkung auf den deutschen Sprachraum zurückwirkte), Otto Rank, Wilhelm Reich, Melanie Klein, Karen Horney, Sandor Radó, Erik Erikson, Harry Stack Sullivan (der ,Psychiater Amerikas', dessen ungeheure Bedeutung für uns Deutsche so schwer nachvollziehbar ist). Dann folgen Existentielle Psychotherapie, die Transaktionsanalyse Eric Bernes und die Biodynamik Massermans. Abschnitten über verschiedene neurotische Störungen folgen dann die Psychotherapien: Psychoanalyse und psychoanalytisch orientierte Psychotherapie, Verhaltenstherapie, klientenzentrierte Psychotherapie nach Rogers, Hypnosetherapie, Familientherapie, Ehetherapie und eine Übersicht über eine größere Zahl neuer Psychotherapiesysteme und Kurzpsychotherapien. Ein Aufsatz über die in Deutschland aus praktischen Gründen so wichtige Frage "Was ist tiefenpsychologisch fundierte Psychotherapie" von A. Heigl-Evers und F.
