In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Sehr gut. 96 p.: Ill. Die Seiten sind papierbedingt gebräunt. Sonst aber ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar/ The pages are browned due to the paper. But otherwise a good and clean copy. - This is the first series of books to gather together the flill panorama of ukiyo-e"pictures of the floating world from its inception in early genre paintings to the versatile genius of such masters as Hokusai. Each book examines a specific master, style or medium and has sixty-four pages of full-color reproductions, many available outside Japan for the first time. Masterworks of Ukiyo-e will provide collectors and scholars with excellent quick reference sources, and readers with no previous knowledge of Japanese art with an unusually fine and specific introduction to its appreciation?at a remarkably low price. Utamaro: In no period more than the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries did the portrayal of women occupy so large a place in the art of Japan. The bijin-ga or pictures of beautiful women were, in fact, the most popular of the ukiyo-c prints. And the work of Kitagawa Utamaro, more than that of any other ukiyo-e artist, reflects the importance of the role played by women in the life of Edo?particularly the women of the gay quarters. The great courtesans of the Yoshiwara played only one part in the drama of Utamaro prints. He chose his subjects from among other classes of women as well: favorites of the unliccnsed^^ teahouses, daughters of wealthy merchant families, and prostitutes of the lower grade. Utamaro was both a great designer and technician. A large proportion of his compositions are diptychs, triptychs, or multiple designs where as many as six individual prints are placed together to form a huge pictureeach print complete within itself yet a part of the whole composition. Sometimes this kind of technical virtuosity impresses one as artistic showmanship. Utamaro was, in fact, known as a braggard, and many of his prints incorporate texts that are either full of self-praise or of scathing criticism of other ukiyo-e artists. This volume reproduces seventy-six examples of Utamaro's genius. The text includes a complete Romanized list of the original Japanese titles of all the prints reproduced, a biography of the artist, and an essay, accompanied by black-and-white illustrations, that traces the history of the changing ideals of feminine beauty in Japanese art, from ancient Bodhisattva figures to the masters of bijin-^a in the ukiyo-e. Muneshige Narazaki graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University in 1930, and in 1933 became editor-in- chief of the magazine Ukiyo-e Geijutsu. After World War II, he joined the faculty of Rissho University and was awarded a doctor's degree in 1954. He is executive director of the Japan Ukiyo-e Society and the author of numerous works on the ukiyo-e, one of which is The Japanese Print, published by Kodansha International in 1966. Sadao Kikuchi graduated from Rissho University in 1946, and is now a member of the faculty at the University. He is curator and chief researcher at the Tokyo National Museum and a member of the board of trustees of the Japan Folklore Society. Mr. Kikuchi is well- known in Japan as an authority on the ukiyo-e and has written numerous books and articles on the subject. ISBN 9780870110665 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 270.

In den Warenkorbpaperback_bunko. Zustand: Good. Black/white & Color Illustrations (illustrator). Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
