Sammelband containing the first editions of two significant astronomical textbooks: an influential edition of Sacrobosco's De Sphaera with scholia by the Renaissance humanist Ãlie Vinet, supplement by Giovan Pietro Pierio Valeriano, and treatise on climates by Pedro Nuñez; and Caspar Peucer's Elementa Doctrinae de Circulis Coelestibus. Unsophisticated in contemporary vellum. The Tractatus de Sphaera was the most important astronomy textbook of the medieval and early modern period. Composed around 1230 by Johannes de Sacrobosco, a scholar at the University of Paris, it circulated in manuscript for over two centuries, becoming in 1472 one of the first scientific books to be printed. By the early 17th century, right up to the time of Newton, more than two hundred editions had been published. Sacrobosco is here 'mainly concerned with the circles on the sphere â" the equator, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the ecliptic, the meridian and horizon. It is often said that the book is a simple version of Ptolemy's Almagest (140 C.E.), but there very little of what we call Ptolemaic astronomy in it â" a single mention of epicycles and deferents, with no indication of how to use them to predict planetary motion' (Ashworth, 'Johannes de Sacrobosco', Linda Hall Library). Of particular importance for the history of science, Sacrobosco argues 'every which way from Sunday that the Earth is a sphere' and his figure for the Earth's circumference, 25,000 miles, comes close to the modern calculation (Ashworth). Caspar Peucer (1525-1602) was a student and son-in-law of Melanchthon who became a leading mathematician, and astronomer at the University of Wittenburg, as well as advisor and physician to the Elector of Saxony. His Elementa Doctrinae was a basic textbook on spherical astronomy that took the geocentric position. It was successful, being republished several times.

Summary Calendar calculations held a significant place in medieval education. They were used to determine movable feasts like Easter and Pentecost for a given year, calculate the day of the week… for specific dates, and determine the moon's age, i.e., how many days had passed since the last new moon. Various tools were employed for these tasks, including key numbers for years, months, and festivals, calculation rules with or without the use of fingers, tables, and mnemonic verses. Given the importance of calendar calculations, it is not surprising that numerous contemporary texts comprehensively covered this subject. The current edition includes 15 texts from the period 1103 to 1232, 14 of which have not been printed before. Only the most successful of these texts, written by Johannes de Sacrobosco, was first printed in 1538 and subsequently in many other editions. The rich content of the texts published here is made accessible through several indexes, including an alphabetical subject index. Very good, well-margined and handsomely illustrated copy of the first edition of this important collection on Ptolemaic astronomy intended for students, and the most widely used of the early modern period. Johannes de Sacrobosco (or Holywood, 1195-1256) was a monk and astronomer who taught at Paris. His ground-breaking works were extremely influential in the medieval period; they focused on astronomy and mathematics including the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, a study of the shortcomings of the Julian calendar (anticipating C16 debates) and his treatise 'Sphaera mundi'. First published in 1472, it was reprinted dozens of times in Europe throughout the C15. It discusses the earth in relation to the geocentric Ptolemaic universe, touching on subjects including its physical composition, geometrical realization, its (as it were) sphericity, the revolution of the heavens and the zodiac in relation to sunrise and sunset, the meaning of zenith and climate zones. Johannes Regiomontanus (Müller von Königsberg, 1436-76) studied at Leipzig and Vienna, devoting himself to commentaries on ancient texts on arithmetic and astronomy. He established the first astronomical observatory in Nuremberg. His work argues against the 'deliramenta' of Gherardus Cremonensis's Ptolemaic 'Theorica Planetarum', written in the C12 and the most important manual of astronomy used in Faculties of Arts. Structured as a dialogue between two scholars, it concerns calculations relating to very specific points of the Ptolemaic system, e.g., epicycles and longitude, with the help of geometrical diagrams. The last work'Theoricae novae planetarum'was written by Georgius Purbach (von Peuerbach, 1423-61), an Austrian astronomer and mathematician, acquainted with Regiomontanus. It is a clear introduction to the Ptolemaic universe which discusses the sun and moon, theories of the polar axis and astronomical connections between the moon and the motions of other planets. The early C16 annotator of 'Sphaera mundi' was probably one of the 'novicii adolescentes' (young students) to whom the works were addressed. He applied sundry learning techniques, which shed light on the teaching of astronomy: the typically medieval and early modern interlinear paraphrasis (the rewriting of a concept using synonyms, e.g., 'ascensu' for 'ortu'); marginal glosses (e.g., the astronomical concept of 'annus bisextilis', a clarification of the meaning of 'opposition' for the zodiac); and the clarification of sources (e.g., the specific book in which Euclid discusses the geometrical 'sphaera'). This is a very rare copy, especially in such good condition, of the most famous work by the English mathematician and astronomer Sacrobosco, who taught at the University of Paris. In his Tractatus de Sphaera, a textbook on spherical astronomy, written around 1230, he discusses the Earth's place in the universe, its spherical shape, geodesy, climate zones, the origin of eclipses, and more. It was used at universities throughout Europe as a mandatory handbook for astronomy instruction well into the 17th century. The edition, with the commentary of the humanist Elie Vinet, went through numerous editions in the 16th and 17th centuries. This preface was widely reprinted in editions of the Sphere, even in Catholic countries, and Cavellat included it in his editions. Although Melanchthon's works were all placed on the Index of prohibited books in 1559, Catholic publishers like Cavellat continued to include this preface, although they frequently removed Melanchthon's name. Cavellat's editions of the Sphaera emendata were richly illustrated, with about fifty different woodcuts, including volvelles' (Crowther et al., p. 10). The same preface to the 1559 Cavellat edition had appeared with the names of Melanchthon and Grynaeus, and the preface was almost always excised from previous Cavellat editions; this is seemingly the first edition in which their names are suppressed to avoid censorship.Here, Sacrobosco's treatise is followed by Pedro Nunes's Annotatio in extrema verba capitis de climatibus, translated by Vinet (the two had at some point been in contact) and first appended to the Sphaera in 1555/56 (ff. 51v-57r); an excerpt of the third book of the Epitome of Ptolemy's Almagest by Regiomontanus (ff. 57v-58r); an extract from Al-Farghani (Alfraganus) on heliacal rising and setting; the anonymous De ortu poetico (ff. 60r-74v), 'which provided all the information needed to inventory and to interpret the astronomical passages in classical texts' (Pantin, p. 282); Piero Valeriano's Compendium in sphaeram (ff. 75r-97v); as well as a brief extract by Proclus on eclipses and a poem dedicated to Valeriano by Donato Villalta (1510-1560).Our copy bears numerous contemporary annotations, largely to the Sphaera emendata. The annotator frequently adds labels to the numerous woodcut diagrams (e.g. adding the signs of the zodiac and the length of each planet's orbit to the Ptolemaic Primum mobile) and makes reference to a wide range of sources, including the fifteenth-century astronomer Georg von Peuerbach, Alfonso X of Castile, Regiomontanus, Theodosius, and Euclid. Many of the annotations are concentrated within the second book of the Sphaera, particularly with regard to the signs of the zodiac, making note of temperaments and elements associated with each sign as well as adding a diagram visualising Sacrobosco's concept of the signum, where each sign is represented by a thirty-degree, wedge-shaped section with its centre at the Earth's core. Our annotator also adds a drawing of a cordiform map, divided longitudinally, to f. 43r. One additional annotation, to Valeriani's Compendium in sphaeram, flags up 'stupid opinions' regarding ancient practices of shouting and banging cymbals when faced with a lunar eclipse.This copy is bound without the final leaf, containing parts of moveable diagrams to be cut out and mounted to corresponding figures in the text; the volvelles were at one point cut out and attached.

Andrieux' (this book was bought with the money of Louis Andrieux) partially obscured.A richly annotated and illustrated copy of Sacrobosco's textbook of astronomy, with additions by Élie Vinet and Pedro Nuñes, edited by Francesco Giuntini. Joannes de Sacrobosco (died c.1256) compiled his textbook on astronomy, explaining the use of the armillary sphere, for students at the University of Paris. It stayed in use, subjected to numerous commentaries and adaptations, until the mid-seventeenth century; it has been calculated that more than 350 editions were printed from 1472 onwards. Pedro Nuñes (15021578) translated parts of De sphaera along with other astronomical texts into Portuguese; his Tratado da sphera was printed in 1537. His notes were translated and incorporated by Élie Vinet (15091587) into his Sphaera emendata (Paris, 1556); it is likely that Nuñes and Vinet were acquainted. Francesco Giuntini (1523?1590) entered the fray in 1564 with an edition printed in Lyon, incorporating the work of Vinet and Nuñes, which is reprinted here. This 1566 Antwerp edition was also issued with Jean Richard's name in the imprint. This copy shows close engagement and expansion of the text by a contemporary scholar, with lengthy annotations across numerous pages. The annotations are in a small contemporary, seemingly French, hand, and while some of the notes reference words or phrases in the text, with some underlining of significant passages, many show a much more detailed engagement with the text, including calculations and annotations to diagrams, with the use of astrological symbols. The horoscope drawn on the upper cover of the binding, now somewhat faded, indicates a reader very much familiar with astrological practice. First published in 1570, Clavius's commentary on Sacrobosco's Sphere was repeatedly revised to follow developments in astronomical knowledge. The edition of 1581 is considerably expanded and contains an analysis of eccentrics, epicycles, and eclipses (ch.IV, pp.41567), including Clavius's first-hand accounts of the eclipses of 1560 and 1567, the first known record of an annular solar eclipse. It is in the present edition that Clavius provides, for the first time, an extensive and methodical denunciation of Copernican heliocentrism (see especially pp.4367), becoming 'the first to accuse Copernicus not only of having presented a physically absurd doctrine but also of having contradicted numerous scriptural passages' (DSB). Despite his anti-Copernicanism, however, Clavius maintained a friendship with Galileo and in April 1611 submitted a report to Cardinal Bellarmine confirming Galileo's discoveries in Sidereus nuncius (1610), and corresponded with Galileo regarding his discovery of Jupiter's satellites. Although usually described as the third, the present edition is in fact plausibly the second: the reported edition of 1575 is found only in the records of the Frankfurt book fair of the following year, likely a reissue of the first edition intended to make the book seem 'as up to date as possible, or to qualify for declaration at a Book Fair under the category "libri novi"' (Maclean, p.200). During the Middle Ages the De sphaera enjoyed great renown, and from the middle of the thirteenth century it was taught in all the schools of Europe . As late as the seventeenth century it was used as basic astronomy text" (DSB XII, 61). - Eine von zwei leicht unterschiedlichen Sammlungen astronomischer Werke, die 1518 in Venedig von den Erben Ottaviano Scotos und hier von Lucantonio Giunta (1457-1538) herausgegeben wurden und die wichtige Kommentare zu Sacroboscos Tractatus de sphaera und zu den Theoricae novae von Francesco Capuano da Manfredonia enthalten, und die erstmals gegen Ende des Jahres 1499 in Venedig gedruckt wurden. Capuano war Professor für Astronomie in Padua und hatte bereits 1495 einen Kommentar zu Peuerbachs Theoricae planetarum veröffentlicht. Anschließend trat er unter dem Namen Giovanni Battista in die Reihen der regulären Laterankanoniker ein. Spätere Ausgaben seines Kommentars zu Sacroboscos Tractatus wurden unter dem Namen Giovanni Battista Capuano veröffentlicht und enthalten einen überarbeiteten Text des Werks. Capuanos Werk wurde dem Kommentar zur Sphaera des wegen bestimmter astrologischer Aussagen von der Inquisition zum Tode verurteiltvon Cecco d`Ascoli (Francesco Stabili) (1257-1327) gegenübergestellt. In Capuanos Werk dienen die naturphilosophischen Texte des Aristoteles, der Almagest des Ptolemäus (um 100-170) und das Kompendium der Sternenkunde von Al-Farghani (um 800-870) als Grundlage für die Erläuterung des Werks von Sacrobosco. Nur sehr selten werden andere Quellen erwähnt. Das von Robert Grosseteste verfasste Compendium sphaerae und vor allem Pierre d`Aillys Quaestiones subtilissimae zu Sacroboscos Werk sind von großer Bedeutung und bilden einen sehr interessanten Text, der einige der am meisten diskutierten Fragen der mittelalterlichen Astronomie berührt: z.B. die Anzahl der himmlischen Sphären, die Variation der Neigung der Ekliptik und die Frage, ob exzentrische Bahnen und Epizykel notwendig sind, um "den Schein der Planetenbewegungen zu wahren". In den Ausgaben von 1518 erscheinen die Michael Scot zugeschriebene Expositio of the Sphaera und der Tractatus de sphaera von Campanus von Novara (um 1220-1296) erstmals in dieser Sammlung. - Außerdem enthalten: Cecco d`Ascoli, Lefevre d`Etaples, Gerard of Cremona, Theodosius Bithynia. - Stellenw. etw. fleckig und gering gebräunt, einige Blätter elicht wasserrandig.
