Shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Browning to edge of back D/J. With a Preface by Father Trevor Huddleston. It was in November 1927 that Solly Sachs threw up his studies for the bar, the the University of Witwatersrand, to become general secretary of the Garment Workers' Union. The conditions then prevailing in the industry were quite appalling and Sachs found that the workers, most of them Africaner women, were being ruthlessly exploited. This book tells of the fight to improve their conditions. But this book is more than just a Trade Union history: in the course of its struggles the union was to encounter every major national problem of the last thirty years. The history of the Garment Workers' Union epitomises the history of South African itself during the period of its industrial revolution. Part of Mr. Sachs' purpose in this book is to show that the policy of segregation is not only morally indefensible, but unsound on economic grounds as well, and must inevitably retard South Africa's industrial development. 238 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
