He became a full professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland at the age of forty.When he was 48, Howard gave up the comfort and prestige of his scientific career after a trip to Africa. He left his position as a Section Chief at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, NJ and applied to medical school. Despite numerous rejections because of his age, he was admitted to the Case-Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1973 and graduated with his medical degree in 1976, and became a neurologist.Howard practiced medicine with only one goal to help people. He practiced in Sri Lanka, Israel and Bosnia. He conducted a headache study in Ecuador and directed headache clinics at SUNY, Stony Brook, New York, in New Mexico and Massachusetts.After a stroke destroyed the right side of his brain, he got back on his feet and continued to work as a neurologist for another 10 years despite physical handicaps from the stroke.
