Recolheu plantas em Itália, Espanha, Portugal e nas Montanhas de Tetuão em Marrocos, onde foi o primeiro botânico a fazê-lo. Durante a sua expedição ao Brasil fez escala nas Canárias, onde ficou muito mais tempo do que o previsto.
