His 300 letters home offer a different view…of the war - not of heroics and battle, but of war's tedium, discomfort, and inefficiency. Bored but never boring, Sabel is frank in his criticism of those in command as he is in affectionately scolding his mother for sending such perishables as strawberries and chocolate to the tropics. A farmer from Marshall County, Indiana, Sabel also managed a farm on Kalumbangara to supply the hospital an Munda with fresh fruits and vegetables.
