Las teorías clásicas y contemporáneas que buscan comprender dichos actores, adolecen de ciertos huecos y vacíos conceptuales en sus explicaciones. El presente libro es una discusión que intenta, más que ofrecer soluciones, inaugurar la reflexión sobre la posibilidad de reconstruir la teoría de la acción colectiva, desde la perspectiva de una teoría social fundamentada en términos ling ísticos, que permita comprender la constitución de los actores colectivos en el plano de las comunidades que comparten mundos de vida cotidianos, como entramado sociocultural que sostiene las mediaciones entre los actores individuales y órdenes sociales en forma triple; es decir, resguardando saberes y tradiciones culturales, normas y solidaridades sociales, y experiencias subjetivas para la formación de personalidades. Con dicha plataforma conceptual, se puede enfatizar, en forma más consistente, el proceso mismo de la organización de tales actores -su estructura, funciones y diferenciación--, resaltando las relaciones de poder dentro de éstos y enfrentando, sin titubeos, temas como la identidad social, la memoria colectiva, las redes de pertenencia, etc. Que, comúnmente, se tienden a olvidar o dar por sentado, desterrando la complejidad y diversidad interna del fenómeno.
