Sgt. Erik Saar (now a civilian) was a decorated and loyal soldier whose training in Arabic qualified him to serve as translator. He describes the cellblocks and interrogation rooms, and offers portraits of American soldiers and prisoners, all of which convey a surreal world almost cut off from humanity. His reports include the use of beatings, sexual degradation, and religious insults, and he charges that mock interrogations, meant to look legitimate, were staged whenever Congresspeople or other oversight groups inspected the facility.
