Covering six art branches in the first volume - sculpture, architecture, bronze, carving in wood, ivory, rhinoceros horn, lacquer and carving in jade and other hard stones - and six others in the second volume - pottery and porcelain, glass, enamels, jewellery, textiles and pictorial art - it provides the reader with a wide-ranging perspective of the artistic and cultural production of China, while simultaneously contextualising each section both temporarily and geographically. Each chapter is enriched with images of pieces from the Victoria and Albert Museum, which illustrate the technical and visual development of these arts. An index is provided in both volumes, while the second volume also includes an appendix regarding the marks and seals on Chinese pottery and porcelain.
