Besonders in zwei Punkten gibt der Verfasser, meiner Meinung nach, wichtige Beiträge zur Psychologie. Der eine Punkt ist der allgemein-psychologische Ertrag, den er dur…ch das Studium der manio-depressiven Psychose gewinnt. Er zeigt, daß sich innerhalb dieser Krankheitsgruppe jedes, selbst das komplizierteste Gefühl repräsentiert findet, und zwar in vergrößertem Maßstabe, so daß jeder einzelne Zug mit größerer Deutlichkeit hervortritt. Man kann dadurch auf Züge aufmerksam werden, die bei der Beobachtung des normalen Seelenlebens nicht so leicht bemerkt werden. Dazu kommt noch, daß in den krankhaften Zuständen die Selbstbeherrschung fehlt, die sich bei normalen Menschen mehr oder minder geltend macht. Der andere Punkt ist die Beschreibung und Analyse der "Mischformen" verschiedener Ordnungen, seelischer Zustände, in welchen sich verschiedene Gefühlselemente gleichzeitig und mit gegenseitiger Kontrastwirkung geltend machen, so daß die Elemente gegeneinander abgestimmt sind. In einer Mischform erster Ordnung wie "der aktiven produktiven Melancholie" ist tiefe Unlust mit potenzierter motorischer Unruhe und mit großer Gedankenflüchtigkeit verbunden. In Mischformen höherer Ordnung werden die Verhältnisse- immer mehr kompliziert, indem sich nicht nur Lust und Unlust gegeneinander abstimmen, sondern ein gewisser Gedankeninhalt seinen Einfluß auf den Charakter der Gefühle ausübt.
