First edition of Edward Daniel Clarke's magnum opus "Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa" the author's personal account of a fascinating journey throughout three continents. Following a tour of Scandinavia in 1799, Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822) travelled through Russia and the Crimea before proceeding to Constantinople, Rhodes, and afterwards Egypt and Palestine. Greece was the country next visited. While touring this country, Clarke, as a mineralogist and antiquary, collected marbles, coins and vases and purchased a large ancient statue at Eleusis. From Athens he proceeded by land to Constantinople, and after a short stay in that city directed his course homewards through Rumelia, Austria, Germany and France. Each of the six volumes is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text vignettes and woodcuts, as well as full-page copper plates (many folded), depicting views, monuments, natives in traditional costume, ceremonies and processions, antiquities, etc. Includes several folded maps and charts. All the 185 copper plates and 157 vignettes and cuts are accounted for. Plates engraved by Joseph Skelton, R. Pollard, Laetitia and Elizabeth Byrne, F. R. Hay, J. Fittler, and R. Cooper after illustrations by E. D. Clarke, Angelica Clarke, Guarenghi, Martin, Dreier, W. Havell, Camporesi, J. B. Lusieri, Morritt, W. Harraden, Grelot, Fauvel, G. The largest section, entitled "British India - Northern part", covers the region from India's northern borders with Bhutan and Nepal, southward to Berar with the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea on either side. Above are inset maps of Cabul and Nepal. Coloring represents the rule under which each region lies, as described by the key. Includes place names, rivers, and topographical features marked by hachure. The Nepal map is especially detailed, showing rivers, place names, roads and mountain passes, military routes of Chinese and Nepalese armies, and residences of important Lamas. The city of Cabul is displayed in the top left section, and also features place names, rivers, and roads. The city limits are visible. This map appeared in John Thomson's New General Atlas, 1817. The map is in very good condition with some minor toning and offsetting. John Thomson (1777 - 1837) was a Scottish bookseller and publisher active in the early 19th century, who was one of the leaders in Europe who favored detailed and accurate mapping over the decorative and elaborate cartouches that appeared in earlier maps. His most important work was "Thomson's New General Atlas" and his "Atlas of Scotland". Map dimensions 63 x 87 cm, overall 64.5 x 88 cm. An attractive folding map of the county with original colour in block and outline. Scale: ½ inch to one mile. Dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen, both folded end sections with marbled paper tabs, one side with a publisher's label, folds into original marbled paper slipcase with printed label to upper cover. Some wear to the case with the upper edge of one joint cracked, the map slightly browned overall, otherwise a very good copy. Essex was the second Ordnance Survey map to be published, preceded by Kent in 1801. This is the true first edition of their map of the county, the full four sheet version being published the following year. Rare, the only institutional copies found are in the British Library, Cambridge and Oxford. The only auction record is the Wardington copy, sold at Sotheby's in 2006.…
