Zustand: Good. - Six typed paragraphs filling most of a sheet of 11" high by 8-1/2 inch wide Evening Telegram /"Round the Town" letterhead with the Telegram's address printed at the top and a small box at top left enclosing the words "ROUND the TOWN / With S. Jay Kaufman". Signed "S Jay Kaufman". The bottom corners of the letter are darkened with the bottom right corner creased. The bottom edge of the letter is darkened, creased & lightly chipped. There is a light paper-clip imprint to the top edge together with the recipient's faded stamp and letter "L". Folded 3 times for mailing. Good. Broadway producer, director and writer S. Jay Kaufman [1886-1957] replies to a letter from impresario James Pond who has proposed a lecture series. Kaufman agrees to Pond's terms for the series: "However, the one matter which isn't clear is the circulars and printed matter. Still, your letter reads that in the event of your undertaking any special mailing campaigns on my behalf, the mailing campaigns are to be mutually agreed upon before undertaking. This is satisfactory to me. On the whole I think you will find me very easy to deal with."Round the Town" was a musical revue produced by Kaufman which was due to open on May 23, 1924. Kaufman also wrote a column with the same name for the Evening Telegram.

END. - The reference to page 12 is noted in ink on page 12, and it seems to be an implication to an affair Lord V had with Mavis Wheeler: Text states: ' Bill. A highlowbrow! Do you want me to tell you what a highlowbrow is - No I don't - Alright then, I'll tell you. A highlowbrow [Slowly.] is a man who tries to get every good out of every good thing; he plays poker ; he goes to boxing ; he reads interestin' books ; he against all the blue laws ; he minds nobody's business but his own - and he has no objection to beautiful women - that's me'. END - Research seems to show that Lord Vivian was: Anthony Crespigny Claude Vivian, 5th Baron Vivian who was an impresario restaurateur who became a celebrity in 1954 when he was shot in the abdomen by Mavis Wheeler, the former wife of the archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler, who was one of the best-known British archaeologists of the twentieth century, and a former mistress of Augustus John. - [femme fatal] - Vivian commanded tabloid headlines in 1954, when his lover, Mavis Wheeler, the former wife of both Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Horace de Vere Cole, and the mistress of Augustus John, was jailed for six months for shooting him in the abdomen. At Wheeler's trial, the prosecuting counsel said that her love for Lord Vivian was overpowering and that she was jealous of any attention he showed to other women. This love, the prosecution claimed, had led her to shoot him, on 30 July 1954, at a range of three inches, with intent to murder him at her country cottage at Potterne, Wiltshire. Giving evidence from his hospital bed in Devizes, Lord Vivian said he was shot while climbing in a window, having lost the key. He said: "I cannot believe now Mrs. Wheeler wanted to kill me. I was always devoted to her and I still am." He and Wheeler lived together in Chelsea, he said, "happily - except she was often jealous even of certain of his men friends". Wheeler was found not guilty of attempted murder and shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She served a six-month prison sentence at Holloway Gaol for unlawful and malicious wounding. On 2 February 1955, she was released from jail and was photographed by the press strolling with Lord Vivian. According to English socialite Nicky Haslam, Wheeler and Lord Vivian got back together after she was released from prison, and "they lived together happily ever after". - Description of book: The original dustjacket accompanies this book. The only mark in the book is the mark made on page 12 by the author as a reference to Lord Vivian at the front of the book.
