Small, slim 12mo (16cm.); publisher's blue cloth, printed paper spine label; yellow coated endpapers; vi,[7]-108pp. Quite nice, with just mild overall rubbing and slight fading to spine cloth; spine label remains intact and bright. A superior copy. Bulfinch's third published book and first collection of poetry, written while he was serving as Assistant Pastor of the Second Independent (i.e. Universalist) Church of Charleston, South Carolina. The volume is dedicated to Bulfinch's superior, Rev. Samuel Gilman and is comprised in roughly equal measure of "Devotional" poems, on religious and patriotic themes; and "Miscellaneous" poems, including sonnets and occasional works. Bulfinch was the brother of Thomas, author of "Bulfinch's Mythology," and is mostly remembered today (if at all) as a hymnodist, composer of such once-popular works as 'Hath not thy heart within thee burned?" and "O, suffering friend of human kind.".…
