The West African marine species generally known as Asthenotoma spiralis (Smith, 1872) is revised, and transferred to the genus Tomopleura Casey, 1904. This specific name is shown to be preoccupied and a replacement name Tomopleura spiralissima n. nom. is provided. Two further species Tomopleura fuscocincta n. sp. and Tomopleura tricincta n. sp., hitherto confused with T. spiralis, are described with a type locality in Angola. All three species have larval shells indicating a planktotrophic development and therefore good ability for dispersal, and all three are broadly sympatric across the entire West African region from Senegal to Angola. They are nevertheless differentiated in microhabitat and normally do not occur together in the same samples. New taxa: Tomopleura fuscocincta n. sp., Tomopleura tricincta n. sp. 12 pp., 11 figs, gr. 8.

Forty-six "skeneimorph" species from the South Azorean Seamount Chain (SASC) have been studied. These comprise taxa in the superfamilies Trochoidea (family Skeneidae) and Seguenzoidea (families Trochaclididae, Pendromidae, Eudaroniidae and several genera which are not assigned to a family). Seventeen new species are proposed, fifteen in Seguenzoidea and two in Trochoidea. Three species are transferred to different genera: Xyloskenea xenos Hoffmann, van Heugten & Lavaleye, 2010 is assigned to Trenchia, Trochus (Margarita) minima Seguenza, 1876 and Lissotesta scalaroides Rubio & Rolán, 2013 to Mikro. Twelve species (26%) are only known from the SASC and are probably endemic to this region. Twenty-one species are known from the SASC and/or the Azores seamounts and this set is probably endemic to this larger area. Five amphiatlantic species were found. New taxa: Trochaclis fortis n. sp., Trochaclis carinata n. sp., Trochaclis platoensis n. sp., Adeuomphalus axistriatus n. sp., Adeuomphalus curvistriatus n. sp., Eudaronia spirata n. sp., Eudaronia mikra n. sp., Anekes anderswareni n. sp., Anekes mikrosculpta n. sp., Anekes umbilisculpta n. sp., Anekes varisculpta n. sp., Moelleriopsis atlantis n. sp., Moelleriopsis gritta n. sp., Moelleriopsis meteorminora n. sp., Trenchia teriuga n. sp., Mikro perforata n. sp., Skenea basicarinata n. sp. 82 pp., 63 figs, 2 tabs, br. gr. 8.

Bivalves are one of the most important groups of marine animals: they are abundant in benthic communities, they are sought after as seafood or ornament, and their shells are almost always conspicuous on the world's beaches. This identification guide for West African marine bivalves covers 462 species belonging to 59 families, based on an extensive material collected over several decades from Mauritania (Cap Blanc) to Angola (Baia dos Tigres), and now housed in Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, Paris. Therefore, any bivalve collected in marine near shore in West Africa is most likely to be covered. Deep sea species (those normally collected below 500 m depth, an additional 150 species) are listed but not treated. The book is profusely illustrated (over 3500 colour and 1600 greyscale photographs, 800 stippled drawings, an average of 12 views per species) so as to be accessible to the non-specialist as well. Each species is treated with: (1) a description accompanied by a drawing of the interior showing the diagnostic details of the hinge and internal impressions, and a photographic plate showing a selection of specimens from different localities across the species' range (2) an indication of distribution accompanied by a schematic map, (3) an indication of habitat, and (4) remarks, including comparisons with similar species. In the headings for each family, generic descriptions are illustrated with thumbnails of the included species, so as to serve as a visual orientation. Morphological terms used in descriptions are explained in a Glossary. The taxonomic part is preceded by an introduction addressing the history of research, the physiography and hydrology of West African coasts, the general characteristics of bivalve molluscs and hints for collecting them. Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris; IRD, Marseille. 1104 pp., 905 figures, 460 maps, hardcover gr. 8 [16.5 x 24.0 cm].

New copy!Although bivalves are one of the most important groups of marine animals, they are also somewhat neglected by malacologists and collectors. This new book is a unique guide to West African marine bivalve molluscs and covers no less than 462 shallow water species in 59 families based on extensive material collected over several decades from Mauritania to Angola. For each species is given: 1) a description accompanied by a drawing of the interior showing diagnostic details of the hinge and impressions, and a photgraphic plate showing a selection of specimens from different localities (2) Indication of distribution and a schematic map (3) indication of habitat (4) remark,s including comparisons with similar species.
