Beadle and Tatum won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Joshua Lederberg for their discovery that genes act by regulating definite chemical events. Beadle and Tatum are the fathers of modern genetics, and their work with Neurospora had tremendous importance for 20th century studies of heredity. It was their work on the Neurospora strain that led to their winning the Nobel Prize. Ryan was a pioneer geneticist who initially taught Lederberg at Columbia. Ryan is a significant figure in the early history of genetics, who worked extensively with Beadle & Tatum, and produced vital contributions to the field of cell genetics and the study of mutants. …
