Welty joined the Beloit College, Wisconsin, biology department in 1934. After a few years, he became disappointed in the lack of a current biology text on birds, so took on the job of research and wrote a book himself. Titled Life of Birds, it became the most widely used college textbook on ornithology in the United States and went through several revisions. At their rural home in Turtle Township, Wisconsin, the Weltys established a wildlife refuge which was used as a learning center for students. They traveled widely and their home became a place to entertain faculty and friends. In all of his pursuits, Carl found a willing and competent helper in his wife Susan, herself an author of several books. Accourding to the Director of Military Training eighty-five percent of the troops in the U.S. tactical…and operational units were armed with M1 carbines by early 1945. The U.S. Army jealously guarded its 'critical' supply of carbines during the war but with peace distributed this universally popular arm lavishly among allies and erstwhile enemies alike. With the termination of the carbine manufacturing program in 1945, the ongoing task of maintaining and refurbishing the nation's carbines and the manufacture of new spare parts and further experimental developments devolved upon Springfield Armory. The popularity of the carbine is further attested to by the large number of official military accessories and ancilliaries which were produced and fielded in its support, as well as the nmerous types of .30 caliber cartridges developed for the carbine. In the 1950s, International Aid distribution of U.S. military carbines abroad and the consequent availability of large stocks of .30 caliber carbine ammunition spawned the development of several interesting foreign weapons, some direct 'clones' of the U.S. carbine itself, but others of completely different designs which had in common only the .30 caliber carbine cartridge. An outstanding reference. Long out of print, and getting Scarce. Both the Book and the Dust Jacket are in Fine condition. The Dust Jacket has a "Broadart" style protective cover. An opportunity to purchase a nice copy of an important military reference at a reasonable price.

War Baby! is an in-depth account of the carbine's production history, component variations, production methods, subcontractors, and markings. Perhaps most importantly, the INTEGRATION of components among the prime contractors, a process often resorted to during wartime to keep production moving, is addressed in detail; so don't trade off that "incorrect" carbine until you read what Larry Ruth has to say in this book! The most popular military small arm in U.S. history has been the subect of a number of books, perhaps the most important of which are the perennially popular War Baby! and War Baby… Comes Home. Both have been reprinted numerous times. Today, over seventy years since the birth of the U.S. carbine in 1941, interest in it has not only not abated, but has increased phenomenally. In addition to the over six million military carbines which were manufactured duing World War II, over one million commercial examples have been made or assembled since 1960. Since the initial publication of the War Baby series over two decades ago, the author has continued to research all aspects of the carbine program. He has thus acquired a great deal of new informaion, which takes the form of amendments and additions to existing material as well as new, previously unpublished data and illustrations. Taking into account the thousands of copies of the first two War Baby volumes already in circulation, we have decided not to revise them but to leave them as they are, and present all this new material here. Accordingly, each of the original 41 chapters in the two initial volumes is revisited in a new chapter set, numbered from 101 to 141, each containing all the amendments and additions pertinent to the original chapter. An opportunity to own a beautiful copy of an important reference at a reasonable price.

A member of the graduating January class of 1933, GENEVA ABBOTT PATTERSON, (1916-2011) was asked at age 16…to imagine the city of St. Louis in the future, and she amazingly created a watercolor depicting the St. Louis cityscape and INCLUDED THE ST. LOUIS GATEWAY ARCH 15 YEARS BEFORE IT BECAME A CONCEPT IN THE MIND OF ITS DESIGNER, EERO SAARINEN IN 1947! The Gateway Arch was not completed until 1963. ; She added the following prophetic text spoken by Ulysses's wife Penelope from line 24 of Tennyson's Ulysses (1842): "Yet all experience is an Arch wherethro' gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades for ever, and for ever when I move" ; Geneva Abbott furthered her art studies at the Hadley Vocational School and became a member of the St. Louis Artists Guild. She worked as a commercial artist for International Shoe Company, and then turned to work as a watercolorist in St. Louis, Hilton Head, South Carolina and Vero Beach, Florida; the previous owner of the yearbook has added commentary and newspaper clippings of happenings to many of the senior class, some documenting the deaths of several in World War II, or by violence in St. Louis. Marriages of many of the women are recorded. Updated addresses and phone numbers of many former students are also added ; The yearbook has numerous articles written by students and show photographs and drawings in illustration.
