Softbound. Zustand: Very Good. Octavo, paper covers, xiv, 432 pp., b/w illustratations, notes, glossary, index This fascinating interdisciplinary collection of essays brings gender issues to the foreground in order to redress a profound imbalance in the historiography of the Yishuv, the Jewish community in Palestine, and in the early years of the State of Israel. Although male discourse still dominates this field, some initial studies have begun to create an authentic and multifaceted Hebrew-Israeli voice by examining the activities and contributions of women. This research has led to a number of basic questions: What was the reality of life for women in Jewish society in Ottoman and Mandatory Palestine (Eretz Israel), and in the early years of the State? What was the contribution of women to the renewal of Israeli society and culture? What is the place of gender perceptions in the study of the new local identity? The original articles in this anthology forge an innovative response to one or more of these questions, and reflecting the state of research in the field.…

hardcover. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. Hardcover. Zustand: New. x, 332 pages, 13 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm. This is the first collection of articles in English dealing with a broad selection of current research in historical geography being carried out in Israel. A dynamic core of historical geographers has developed in Israel over the past two decades. By integrating the methods of spatial study and field work with historical and archaeological primary sources, a better understanding of major process in the Holy Land is emerging. The volume is divided into four parts, highlighting historical periods and central themes. The first section provides a background on the changing borders of the Holy Land and the study of Eretz Israel in ancient periods. The second deals with the 19th century under Ottoman rule, emphasizing the transportation infrastructure, entrepreneurship, agriculture and settlement. The third focuses on the Bedouin community, the Arab village and Jewish agricultural settlement in the 20th century. The last part considers institutional and governmental activities in the settlement process including urban social planning and the use of aerial photographs from the turn of the century until the establishment of the state of Israel.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 330 pages : illustrations, maps ; 23 cm. It is commonly accepted that the initial Jewish resettlement of the Holy Land in the late nineteenth century laid the foundations of the State of Israel. But what were the key elements of that process, and who implemented it? What did the new enterprise look like, and what was its significance? These important yet often poorly understood issues are reconstructed and analyzed in this unique study. Ran Aaronsohn provides fresh insight into the role played by Baron Edmond de Rothschild through his many and diverse agents ("the administration") in the Jewish settlement movement and places the endeavor in global perspective by comparing it to the phenomenon of colonization throughout the world. The author draws upon a wide array of sources including primary archival material from Israel and France and illustrates his narrative with maps and historical photos to create a richly detailed picture of a crucial period in Jewish history.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 195 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm. This book focuses on the Muslim, Christian and Jewish neighborhoods outside the walls of old Jerusalem during the final decades of Ottoman rule in Palestine. Prof. Kark reviews the conditions that influenced the building of the new neighborhoods: availability and price of land, construction costs, rental rates, and the nature of the initiatives behind the ventures. The book also focuses on physical and social planning of modern construction in Jerusalem and considers the unique phenomenon of Jewish neighborhood by-laws. The author shows how the physical, economic and especially social neighborhood planning embodied in these guidelines, based partly on Jewish legal tradition, were quite advanced compared to prevailing European, American and no doubt Ottoman towns of the same period.…
