An intensely but carefully used copy in contemporary goatskin over bevelled wooden boards, two clasps, double blind ruled to a panel design, outer border with leafy tendrils in blind, central panel of upper cover with large fleurons at head and foot and rhombus-shaped floral centrepiece within lozenge-shaped frame, lower cover with large fleurons at head and foot and double blind ruled grille de St Laurent with tendrils, a.e.r. Spine in five compartments, each with three large fleurons in blind, raised bands, covers scuffed. Early inked numbers, Russian inscription and pencilled amateur portraits of Mar [Mary?] and Sts Fëdor, Aleksej, Vladimir and Aleksandr to fly, later pencilled Cyrillic inscription 'milostivomu gosudariu (?)' ('to the egregious Master') and numbers to rear pastedown, later Cyrillic inscription 'kresnia marīa sidorovna prestavlas'' kd ïiunia 1882' ('Kresna [surname?] Maria Sidorovna died on 29 June 1882') to ep. The austere binding reprises the design and structural elements of those produced for liturgical books at the Monastery of the Trinity and St Sergius in Zagorsk, c.50 miles north-east of Moscow, which set a standard for the genre from the 1560s (Klepikov, 'Russian Bookbinding to 1750', 417-18). An intensely but carefully used copy of the first part of the 'Okhtaich' (or 'Okhtoich' or 'Okhtaik", rekshe osmoglasnik"' or 'Oktoikh os'moglasnik') published in Moscow in 1638 by the Pechatnyj Dvorthe printing house where the first book in Cyrillic movable type was produced in 1564. The second part was printed separately in the same year and usually bound separately. Derived from the Greek 'Ochtoecos', the 'Okhtaich' was a liturgical text of the Russian Orthodox rite. It features pieces to be sung at services each day of the week. The number 'eight' in the title refers to the subdivision into eight sectionsof which this volume includes the first four; each identified by a letter corresponding to the 'glas' (musical mode) in which the songs were sung, as Russian liturgical chant constructed melodies around individual tones. Part I contains modes 1 to 4. The texts for daily vespers or matins include 'stichiry' (in psalmodic hexameters, some attributed to John of Damascus), antiphons, 'kanoni' (odes with a more complex verse structure), 'pesni' (songs) and 'troparia' (hymns on the liturgical theme of the day). At the end is additional material often found in the 'Okhtaich', including Resurrectional Exaposteilaria and the Gospel Stichiry, and 'troparia' for the Trinity and by Gregory of Sinai In this copy, there are two additional ms. leaves containing four 'kondiaki' short hymns with a main body and a refrain ('ikos') celebrating the Resurrection and sung at the Sunday morning service. This edition of the 'Okhtaich' does not contain the 'kondiaki', as sometimes happened when they were very similar to the 'tropar'' for the same day. 'Kondiaki' for the Resurrection were used for the Paschal service and the owner of this copy probably wished to have them readily available. No copies recorded outside Russia except BL (also Part I only). We have traced 5 copies in Russian libraries. He was an Orthodox Christian bishop, who led elements of the Russian Orthodox diaspora in Western Europe from 1921 until his death. From 1931 he was head of the Patriarchal Exarchate for Orthodox Parishes of Russian Tradition in Western Europe. He was at various times archbishop and metropolitan bishop of the Moscow Patriarchate, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Mr. August Eduard Dimitri (Edward) von Saher (Haarlem 1890 - Bilthoven 1973) was a Dutch jurist. He was the second husband of Dési von Halban, the widow of Jacques Goudstikker. Von Saher was a well-known lawyer in The Netherlands before World War II. A laid in note in the book, typewritten by A.E.D. von Saher's grandson Ferdinand von Saher, states: He was one of the few Dutch members of the old Orthodox Russian Church in The Hague, which was founded by Anna Pavlova Romanoff, the wife of the late King William II of The Netherlands. Mr. von Saher enabled this religious community to erect a new chapel in The Hsague, where the remains of Anna Pavlova's church, including the old altar, the icons, etc. were reassembled. At the consecration of this chapel in the Czar Peter's House in Zaandam - the only piece of soil in the world which still belongs exclusively to the House of Roamnoff and is, therefore, considered by the Belarussians as a sacred place. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia, Metropolite Eulogious of Paris, presented Mr. Von Saher with the old Bible which Her Majesty Anna Pavlova had used herself. Upper blank section of title-page renewed (height ca. 5 cm.). Lacking 1 leaf after the divisional title, but appears to be textually complete (pages 951-952). Skilfully recased with use of old binding.

In den WarenkorbA Russian Orthodox service book for Easter and the week following it, in the Old Church Slavonic language, printed, published and bound at the Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) in Kiev. The monastery was established in the 11th century. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 the Orthodox Churches in Russia and Ukraine de…veloped independently. The power of the Czars allowed the Russian Orthodox Church to dominate, so that the Ukrainian Church came under the Moscow Patriarchate in 1686. The Monastery of the Caves is therefore now Ukrainian Orthodox, but fell under the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church when the present service book was published. It nevertheless had its own traditions and rites, so that the present book should be regarded as part of the Ukrainian heritage.The only other copy we have located is at Amsterdam University Library, one of three Easter service books by the Kiev Pechersk Lavra recorded on WorldCat, all octavos. With a lengthy cyrillic inscription on an endleaf. The sewing is somewhat loose and as a result a few leaves are tattered at the edges. There are occasional minor smudges and drops of candle wax. Much of the gold-tooling has rubbed off the binding and the spine is slightly damaged. In spite of these minor defects, the book is in good condition, especially for a book of this nature.l For the Kiev bindery: S. A. Contemporary gold-panel-stamped and gold-tooled calf by the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, sewn on 4 cords, with a panel stamp of Jesus on the front board (9.7 x 4.5 cm, perhaps with a name in the left half of the lower border) and a panel stamp of Maria with the serpent holding an apple under her feet (9.5 x 4.3 cm), each in a gold-tooled border and with another gold-tooled border around the whole board, gold-tooled spine with "Kanonu Paskhi" (Easter Canon) in Old Slavonic capitals in the second of five compartments, gilt edges. The endpapers, like the paper of the book itself, are laid and have a blue-green cast. Easter liturgy in Old Church Slavonic, with title-page and about 20 other pages printed in red and black, the title in a woodcut border and with a woodcut Paschal lamb, a full-page engraving of Jesus's Resurrection (10 x 6 cm) on the back of the title-page, all pages after the title-page with borders made up of 4 woodcut strips, woodcut head- and tailpieces and decorated initials (a 17 mm and a 9 mm series), and decorations built up from cast fleurons. Set in 3 sizes of Old Slavonic poluustav cyrillic type. Printed on laid paper with a blue-green cast.
