In the original paper-covered boards. Complete with an engraved frontispiece. A delightful birthday book, featuring thoughts, quotes and aphorisms by John Ruskin for each of the year. With a blank section next to each date where the owner can write people's birthdays down. Collected and arranged by M.A.B. (accredited to Maud A. Bateman), and G.A. (accredited to Grace Allen). John Ruskin was an art critic and writer in Victorian England, being an influential figure in the art world, especially with the Pre-Raphaelites. He was also greatly admired by Leo Tolstoy, Marcel Proust, and William Morris. During his life, he published numerous writings on a variety of topics, including geology, architecture, myths, botany and politics. The half title page is present. In the original paper covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with shelf wear to the extremities. Cracks to the joints. Marks to the boards and spine. Fading to the spine. Marks to the spine label. Large tear to the upper spine, and bumping to the lower spine. Spotting and offsetting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise bright and clean with the odd handling mark. Several pages are uncut throughout. Spotting to the fore-edge. Good. book.

'If not, will you kindly accept of this one, tho I fear it is not a very good one in the illustrations?' Book: [xv] + 480pp., 8vo. Sixteen-page November 1868 publisher's catalogue at rear. Book in fair condition, with signs of age and wear, in worn publisher's black leather quarter-binding, with burgundy cloth boards. Most of the illustrations in text, but with coloured frontispiece and three other coloured prints, and three sepia photographic prints. Inscribed on half-title 'With kind regards from R St John Tyrwhitt | March 1st 1869'. Bookplate of William Bosworth, amended to 'Annie | from the Author'. Presented on the reverse of the frontispiece by Thomas Colmer ('great grandson of the Author') to his daughter Lucy Barbara Colmer.
