Hardcover. Zustand: New. Can we really imagine about history and civilization of the Indian subcontinent without its rivers? Its answer is known to everyone that the 'chain of rivers and their basins are inseparably attached with the societal evolution and history of India and its neighbouring countries.' Since the very beginning of settled civilization, the rivers of South Asian countries are considered to be 'sacred' and 'mother of civilization'. They are of course the guiding mentors, sources of livelihood, trade and commerce, transport, production system and national economy; and closely allied with the religion, culture, language and the national identity. On the other hand, they are the matters of concern in regional, national and transnational conflicts and politics. Construction of dams, barrages, power projects and irrigational canals across the rivers have transformed them as a focal point of 'developmental discourse'. Naturally, the transnational rivers of South Asia are inseparably attached to the question of economic development, displacement and rehabilitation The present work is a daring attempt to present a transnational river of South Asia called the Raidak [from Bhutan to Bangladesh through India] in the discourse of nationalism, cultural and environmental studies. In Bhutan, the Raidak is known as Wang Chhu which is following from Upper Bhutan through Thimphu and Chukha to the Indo-Bhutan border. Naturally, the Wang Chhu is an eyewitness of origin and evolution of Bhutanese civilization and culture, 'nation building processes, economic development and immigration of people. In India, the Wang Chhu [with two bifurcated streams called the Raidak I and the Raidak II] along with the Sankosh-Gadadhar-Dudhkumar-Brahmaputra system has intact relationship with the historical development, economic and cultural changes and environmental challenges in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Lower Assam and northern Bangladesh. All these aspects of history of the Raidak from Thimphu.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. South Asia's river systems are known for their multiple topographies and varied geography. There are several transnational rivers that flow to eastern and north-eastern India through Bhutan, Nepal and China. Geological and environmental changes; the construction of dams, barrages and hydroelectric power projects as well as their side effects; and massive floods, soil erosion and a rise in silt beds have changed the traditional relationship between these rivers and the civilizations settled near their banks. River, Society and Culture presents these dynamics in the context of the rivers of Bengal (both West Bengal and Bangladesh) and Assam. It focuses on four riversthe Titash, the Tista, the Kalahi and the Raidakto illustrate the intimate relationship, both historical and contemporary, between these life-giving rivers and their people. This volume on the rivers of Assam and Bengal focuses on one of the environmental issues covered by the 'Reconnecting with Nature' seriesflora, fauna, river systems and urban ecology.

Political forces of socio cultural changes. 4. Colonialism social changes and political assertions. 5. Post colonial ethnicity and regionalism. Conclusion. Appendices. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. Multiplicity of regional and sub national assertions of diverse ethnic groups in post colonial India is no doubt a serious factor in the Indian nation building process. In order to understand the regionalism the social scientists have identified a few factors on the basis of their research approaches. Social economic communal political and cultural factors have been treated as the dynamics of the regional and sub national movements. But regionalism cannot be properly understood without having a new look into the pre colonial and colonial legacies of the regions as identity aspirations had been started in India since the colonial period with the issues of pre colonial political and socio cultural traditions. This book after cortically reviewing the major discourse on various forms of regionalism of colonial and post colonial India has stressed on the process of cultural changes in case of regional aspirations of North Bengal and Lower Assam. There has been a demand to form a separate state in North Bengal since the last years of colonial rule on the basis of caste and cultural linguistic issues. Identity aspiration on such issues however is the spontaneous outcome of the process of cultural change started in North Bengal in the pre colonial period with the formation of the organized states in this region. It was further stimulated under the colonial rule due the administrative requirement of the colonial government. Again formation of states along the linguistic and ethnic lines in postcolonial India and the inevitable impacts of the partition of Bengal had reinforced the demand for a separate state in North Bengal and along with a part of lower Assam. This book has been designed to analyze the identity formation of the ethnic communities of North Bengal and lower Assam with a new approach of cultural change. It has also identified other causatives of regionalism and examined the validity of issues of regionalism in the age of globalization. This book has every possibility to create interest among the academicians students administrators politicians and general readers on the history cultural change and regionalism of North Bengal Northeast India and India as a whole. 200 pp.

Pre Koch political traditions and beginning of formation of the Koch Kingdom. 4. Consolidation segmentation and survival of the Koch Kingdom. 5. Economic solidarity of the Koch Kingdom. 6. Power centrality institutionalization of leadership and the administration. 7. State formation legitimacy and cultural change. Conclusion. Appendices. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. Since several decades process of state formation has been a subject of intensive research among the social scientists. On the basis of their findings and research approaches they have built various state building models of different parts of the world. Historians have also tested different non Indian models of state formation in the Pre Colonial Indian context with little modification or with localizations. This book after critically reviewing major discourse on various forms of Pre Colonial Indian States identified an alternative model in case of the formation of Koch state of the Tista Brahmaputra Valley i.e. North Bengal and Lower Assam. There were a few causative factors in the emergence of the Koch state in the early sixteenth century from the autonomous tribal villages. The dynamics of sociopolitical changes of the state were guided by the economic controlling of culture and the trends of power centrality. Political authority of the state was legitimized by the adopted culture. Inspite of theoretical nearness with the early states tangential similarities with Northeast Indian tribal polities and structural resemblance with traditional concept of ancient and pre colonial Indian kingdoms the Koch state had certain features which were exceptional in many ways. This book provides new insights into the role of warfare in the state formation centralization of political power exploitation of surplus by the state through unusual means monelization of economy and correlations between the legitimization of power and cultural change of the subjects. This book has every possibility to create interest among the academicians students administrators politicians and general readers on the pre colonial history of North Bengal and Lower Assam as well as the studies on state formation both Indian and non Indian context. 258 pp.

From sufficiency to paucity. 4. Attempts for recovery: legislative measures and planning. 5. Community awareness and Fishermen Movement. 6. Reservation and present status of the Fishermen of West Bengal. 7. Conclusion. Appendices. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. "Proper management of the natural resources and the rights of the traditional communities to access the natural resources are no doubt important issues in the age of globalization and global warming. This book after critically examining the relationships between the fisheries and the fishermen of pre-colonial and Colonial Bengal have raised some critical points regarding the management, production relations and location of the fishermen in Post-Colonial West Bengal. Post-colonial relationship between the fisheries and the fishermen on the other hand is deeply rooted with the partition of Bengal in 1947. Partition of Bengal had been appeared as a serious challenge to West Bengal due to the huge migration of the (fish eaters) East Bengalese to this province of India. But the supply of fish was not sufficient as Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) had retained its possession over the prosperous fisheries of the region. All attempts of the post-colonial state to mitigate the fish crisis and the question of resettlement of the East Bengali Refugee and immigrant traditional fishermen have been critically examined in this work. This book will be highly useful to the fishery scientists, social scientists, historians, politicians, environmentalists, human right activists, and to the general readers of the Bengali culture."
