In den WarenkorbZustand: NEAR FINE. First printing. The first novel written under how own name by this educator and author, a delightfully humorous story of playing the stock market. "To most widows approaching fifty and with a widow's mite of $3000, the stock market would appear to be a capricious key to security. But to Jane McPhipps whose only future seemed to be loneliness without Horace and part time school teaching, the investment world was the goose that laid the golden egg. So begins a delightful story of bright magical fun, describing the profits and pitfalls of money and love, against the colorful background of San Francisco." SIGNED on the title page with the comment "with the best wishes of Aunt Jane and the author." Illustrated with drawings by Mircea Vasiliu. Long after Rummell's death in 1969 she was revealed as the author of the 1969 book "Diana: a strange autobiography," a book published under the pseudonym of Diana Frederics, and probably a semi-autobiographical lesbian novel rather than an actual autobiography: it has been described as the first lesbian book in which two women find happiness and fulfillment in their relationship, a radical idea at the time. 210 pp. Near fine in a good dust jacket. (some overall edgewear to dj, with several small chips, a bit of toning to the spine, original price of $3.50 on flap. Uncommon signed. …

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Excellent. 20.25 x 30.5 in, paper size. Signed in pencil. Size 16 x 29 Inches. A scarce 1906 proof printing of the first-edition bird's-eye view of Yale University, drawn by Richard Rummell and signed by the same in pencil in the lower right corner. It was published by F. D. Nichols of Boston. This is not only Rummell's first university view, it is the first printing of such - copyrighted to Nichols and printed by Elson, thus predating Rummell's contract with Littig. A Closer Look The view is centered on Osborne Hall (now demolished and replaced with Bingham Hall) with its distinctive chapel-like façade. Chapel Street runs in front of the Hall and Temple Street can be seen running northward towards East Rock. Many of the extant buildings of the historic Old Campus, including Connecticut Hall (1752), are easily recognizable. Welch Hall and Lawrence Hall stand alongside College Street, across from the New Haven Green, which is complete with the three chapels that still stand: United Church on the Green (Congregational, 1814), Center Church (Congregational, 1812), and Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green (1816). In the distance, the heights of East Rock, with its distinctive Soldiers and Sailors Monument, are recognizable. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. In 1906, Rummell issued his first university view - an illustration of Yale (as here). That view was a sepia tone photogravure copyrighted by F. D. Nichols of Boston and printed by A. W. Elson of Boston. A view of Harvard, likely Rummell's second view, also appeared in 1906 with the same Nicholson/Elson imprint. Subsequently, Littig and Company of New York commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of many of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and both photogravures and lithographs were issued. The photogravures tend to have a much lower survival rate than the lithographed images, which were printed on heavier paper. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting that Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. Rummell's First University View? Of Rummell university views, the Yale and Harvard views are particular both in format and printing style. Unlike many Rummell university views, these early views appear in two formats, a sepia-toned photogravure copyrighted by F. D. Nichols of Boston and the lithograph view issued by Littig in New York. It is likely that the photogravure is earlier, as it often lacks a title (as here). These and other oddities suggest that the Yale view was the first university view Rummell published, and Harvard the second. Being a Brooklynite, Yale would have been one of the nearest and easiest universities to focus on as a prototype for the series. Of all Rummell's university views, it is further noteworthy that the Nichols / Elson / Rummell Yale view is one of the rarest to the market. In more recent times, many of the original lithographic plates for Rummell's college views have been rediscovered, leading to multiple modern reprints of the Littig editions, but the original lithograph printings and especially the photogravures, as here, have become extremely rare. In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Very good. Minor closed and repaired tear, right margin, not extending into image. A few reinforcement points on verso where paper is thin. Size 15 x 27 Inches. This is a rare c. 1913 Richard Rummell bird's-eye view of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. The view looks northeast on Dartmouth from the intersection of Main Street and Wheellock. The Dartmouth Green with its distinctive path structure takes center stage. Dartmouth Hall (1906), with its iconic bell tower, appears at right. Just to the left, Webster Hall (1907), with its colonnaded entrance, is recognizable. The Collis Center (1902) appears in the lower left. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. At the turn of the century, Littig and Company commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and a limited number of engravings were issued. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting the Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. Rummell views appear in full-size, half-size, and quarter-size, both colored and uncolored. Typically, the uncolored sepia-toned images bearing Rummell's pencil signature and the Littig imprint are considered the first editions, but not all his college views are known thus. Some of the views were acquired from Littig and reissued. It is also possible to find proof states lacking the name of the college below the image. Publication History and Census This view was originally published as a photogravure print by A. W. Elston of Boston and W. T Littig in 1906. The present example removes the Littig imprint, adds color, the Rummell signature in the lower right, and a vignette of Dartmouth Hall (1906) in the lower left. We also note a later reprint by Victorious and Cody, c. 1946. The present example, although undated, was most likely printed around 1913. Dartmouth represents one of the scarcer Rummell views, and this issue has no recorded market history. We note multiple examples in the Dartmouth College collections but none elsewhere. In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Very good. Some uneven toning. Size 17 x 30 Inches. A rare 1908 signed Harley D. Nichols photogravure view of the University of Vermont. The view bears some similarity to the work of Richard Rummell, to whom it is commonly and erroneously attributed, but this is wholly the work of Nichols. A Closer Look The view looks east on UVM over the University Green. Recognizable buildings include, at center, Williams Hall, flanked by Lafayette Hall on the right and Billings Library on the left. John Dewey Hall appears at far left. A stylish convertible roadster and well-dressed men and women populate the foreground - a distinctive divergence from Rummell's work which rarely includes people. The Green Mountains roll gently in the background. University Views Although this work is not by Rummell, both Nichols and Rummell share the same publishers, in this case Elson, and clearly collaborated. Nichols' name appears on other views, but the relationship with Rummell was never clearly understood. Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. At the turn of the century, Littig and Company commissioned Rummell, and apparently Nichols as well, to prepare watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and a limited number of photogravures and engravings were issued. Most of these university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting the artists most likely worked from balloons. Publication History and Census The view is signed by Nichols with a date of 1907, and a copyright date of 1908. This view is often erroneously attributed to Richard Rummell, given the shared publisher, Elson, and a clear similarity in style. However, Rummell's name appears nowhere on this work, or in any other example of the University of Vermont view, suggesting it is fully Nichols' work. As it lacks a title, this example is likely a proof. One of the rarer university views in the Rummell style. Signed by Author(s).…

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. 1st Edition. Very Good. Overall toning. Size 16.5 x 29 Inches. This is a scarce, 1910 Richard Rummell view of Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The sepia coloring of this print is consistent with other first editions of Rummell's views. The presence both of the Littig imprint and also Rummell's hand signature reinforces the assessment of this as a first edition. Moreover, the presence of only tracings of the view's title, just discernible in the bottom margin, indicates that it is likely a proof. Dickinson College's Historic Main Campus Founded in 1773 as Carlisle Grammar School, Dickinson would become in 1783 the first college to be founded after the formation of the United States - and at its foundation, the furthest west of any college in the country. The view is centered on the park at the juncture of West High Street and North West Street. Although the College has grown over the intervening century, this view of Dickinson's main campus displays Denny Hall, Old West and East College, and the Tome Scientific Building (renamed in 2001 the Stern Center). Also shown is Bosler Hall, prior to its midcentury renovations. Despite several college closings in its history, Dickinson remains active. Famous alumni include James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States; Roger Brooke Taney, the 5th chief justice of the United States; and Henry Clarke, developer of the Klondike Bar. In den WarenkorbLithograph. Zustand: Fine. Lithograph. Modern framed with dark cherry wood, brushed gold trim, cream matte border. Full piece measures 20.5" x 33.5". Faint toning along upper edge of lithograph, otherwise a fine example. Richard Rummell (1848-1921) was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in London before immigrating to the United States. His campus illustrations, often created using copperplate etching, were commissioned by the New York firm, Littig & Company, between 1890 and 1915. He produced over 40 detailed campus views, including Michigan, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia. Rummell's works are notable for their meticulous detail and his technique of rendering bird's-eye views, as it required both artistic skill and an understanding of architectural design. This work includes the following landmarks at the University of Michigan: Detroit Observatory, Old Haven Hall, University Hall, Tappan Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall, the President's House and Newberry Hall. The University of Michigan by Richard Rummell, the hand-colored lithograph commissioned by Littig & Company in 1907. In den WarenkorbTrimmed to neatline with no loss to image - as with all known examples. Some edge wear. A few minor surface abrasions. Unbacked. Size 25.75 x 41.4 Inches. This is a rare c. 1912 Richard Rummell chromolithograph view of the French Line steamship France on the Hudson River with New York City in the background. The France was the epitome of luxury in the post-Titanic age, dubbed the 'Versailles of the Atlantic'. A Closer Look The SS France is illustrated steaming northbound on the Hudson River, likely on its 1912 maiden voyage, with New York City in the background. The iconic spires of the Woolworth, Singer, and Park Row buildings are recognizable on the skyline. Well-dressed passengers line the ship's railings, admiring the view. In the foreground, several tugboats operated by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique prepare to pull the France into port. Dramatic clouds complement the choppy waters of the Hudson. French Line, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique The SS France was a transatlantic four-stacker steamship operated by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT), known as 'French Line'. The 711-foot steamship (for reference, the Titanic was 882 feet) was commissioned in 1908, launched in 1910, and introduced to the transatlantic route in 1912, just a week after the sinking of the Titanic. The new liner represented a landmark achievement in French maritime engineering. It would not only surpass all existing vessels in the French merchant fleet by more than double in size, but also mark several national firsts: the first French liner equipped with four propellers, the only one ever built with four funnels, and the first to utilize Parsons steam turbine propulsion. It was also the most 'electrified' ship afloat. The interior boasted elaborate baroque-revival architecture and interior design, after which it was nicknamed the 'Versailles of the Atlantic'. France was requisitioned and refitted as an armed merchant cruiser for the French navy during World War I (1914 - 1918). After the war, the liner returned to transatlantic passenger service, where she developed a cult-like following among elite passengers. By the early 1930s, however, the France was outclassed by more modern liners and retired from service in 1932. She was sent to the shipbreakers at Dunkirk in 1935. Chromolithography Chromolithography, sometimes called oleography, is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process uses multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Generally, a chromolithograph begins with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors are layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color can be blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda. Publication History and Census This view was drawn by Richard Rummel and printed in New York for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique French Line by Albert J. Leon Lithographers. Rare. In den Warenkorb1st Edition. Very good. Stabilized on archival tissue. Size 16 x 29.25 Inches. A rare 1911 Arthur J. Elder / Littig bird's-eye view map of the University of Kentucky - here in its first edition. This view is in the style of the more famous contemporaneous university viewmaker Richard Rummell and was published by Littig, also Rummell's publisher. It is one of only 4 known university views drawn by Elder. A Closer Look The view looks south on the University of Kentucky from a high point above the intersection of Administration Drive and South Limestone, suggesting the view was likely drawn from a balloon at about 300 feet in elevation. The Main Building is presented at center. Opened in 1882, this is the only surviving building of the university's four original structures. To the immediate right of the Main Building is UK's second oldest building, the Ezra Gillis Building, long known as the Chemistry Building. To the left is Barker Hall (1901), originally known as the Alumni Building, the later as the Old Gymnasium, and which today houses the school's Army and Air Force ROTC programs. Another recognizable building, Miller Hall (1898), originally known as Science Hall, appears just behind the Main Building. At the far left, the school's first athletic field is evident - this area is not a parking lot. Rummell or Elder? Such university views are more commonly associated with the landscape artist Richard Rummell, who produced dozens for Littig. The views were based on watercolors uniformly drawn from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting a hot-air balloon. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and a limited number of engravings were issued. Until discovering this view, we assumed that all similar views were by Rummell, but it seems that the views were in such demand that Littig hired other artists to sketch schools in different parts of the country. We know Elder produced at least 4 views, but possibly more. University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky (UK), located in Lexington, Kentucky, was founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky. It was part of the Morrill Land-Grant Act, passed by Congress to promote education in agriculture, engineering, and mechanical arts. Originally affiliated with Kentucky University (Transylvania University), it became a separate institution in 1878. UK has since become a major research center focusing on medicine, engineering, and agriculture. Publication History and Census This view was drawn by Arthur J. Elder and published in 1911 by W. T. Litting and Company. We note at least two variants: the present example, which is almost certainly the first edition, and a second that has additional text below the main map. Scarce.…

In den WarenkorbVery good. Exhibits light toning and soiling. Size 17.5 x 28.25 Inches. This is a c. 1913 Richard Rummell view of Smith College, a private liberal arts women's college in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is one of the few Rummell views to represent a women's college, and the only example we've seen. A Closer Look Founded in 1875, Smith College is the largest member of the Seven Sisters collegiate league. Looking west over the campus from the intersection of Elm Street and West Street, College Hall, Smith's first building, appears front and center. To the left of College Hall, some of the buildings still standing on campus include Pierce Hall, Seelye Hall, Lilly Hall, Alumnae Gym, Lawrence House, Morris House, Tyler House, and Neilson Library. Forbes Library, which houses the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library today, appears in the lower left. Identifiable buildings to the right of College Hall include Dewey Hall, Stoddard Hall, and Gillett House. St. John's Episcopal Church, which is not affiliated with Smith College, is also illustrated. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. At the turn of the century, Littig and Company commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copper plates were engraved, and a limited number of engravings were issued. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting the Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. A Closer Look This view was printed around 1913. Rummel prints were reproduced extensively, but original printings, as here, have become extremely rare. There is no additional imprint, but this was likely issued by Littig or Elson. This is the first time we have encountered Rummell's view of Smith College.…

In den WarenkorbExcellent. Slight rippling to sheet, else a fine, bright example. Size 17 x 30 Inches. This is a scarce 1906 Richard Rummell view of Princeton University, in a brilliant full-color example. This is the earlier of two views of the campus Rummell produced. A Closer Look Overlooking campus from a point high above today's Rockefeller College and Nassau Street, Alexander Hall and Maclean House appear immediately on the left. On the right, the first recognizable buildings are Blair and Buyers Halls and the Blair Arch. The old Halstead Observatory appears in front of Blair Hall, which is where Joline Hall stands today. Witherspoon Hall appears immediately behind the Blair Arch. Edwards Hall is partially blocked by Witherspoon Hall and Edwards does the same thing to Dod Hall. Both Little Hall and the Dillon Gym appear to the right of Edwards and Dod, and Princeton's railroad station adorns the right border with several horse-drawn carriages waiting. Returning to Alexander Hall at the center, Stanhope Hall is blocked by trees and Nassau Hall with its iconic belfry. East Payne Hall and Chancellor Green, then Princeton's library, are to the left of Nassau Hall. Dodge Hall appears to the right of East Payne Hall and McCosh Hall is illustrated to the left and behind both Didge Hall and East Payne Hall. 1879 Hall is recognizable in the background on the left. Publication History and Census This is the first of Rummell's views of Princeton, drawn no earlier than 1906. It was commissioned and printed by Littig Company of New York, but printings were also executed by Boston's A.W. Elson and Co. We have seen modern restrikes from the original Littig plates; we can be confident this is not one of these, as the restrikes bear the Littig imprint (absent here). References: OCLC 54650256.
