Soft cover. Excellent. 20.25 x 30.5 in, paper size. Signed in pencil. Size 16 x 29 Inches. A scarce 1906 proof printing of the first-edition bird's-eye view of Yale University, drawn by Richard Rummell and signed by the same in pencil in the lower right corner. It was published by F. D. Nichols of Boston. This is not only Rummell's first university view, it is the first printing of such - copyrighted to Nichols and printed by Elson, thus predating Rummell's contract with Littig. A Closer Look The view is centered on Osborne Hall (now demolished and replaced with Bingham Hall) with its distinctive chapel-like façade. Chapel Street runs in front of the Hall and Temple Street can be seen running northward towards East Rock. Many of the extant buildings of the historic Old Campus, including Connecticut Hall (1752), are easily recognizable. Welch Hall and Lawrence Hall stand alongside College Street, across from the New Haven Green, which is complete with the three chapels that still stand: United Church on the Green (Congregational, 1814), Center Church (Congregational, 1812), and Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green (1816). In the distance, the heights of East Rock, with its distinctive Soldiers and Sailors Monument, are recognizable. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. In 1906, Rummell issued his first university view - an illustration of Yale (as here). That view was a sepia tone photogravure copyrighted by F. D. Nichols of Boston and printed by A. W. Elson of Boston. A view of Harvard, likely Rummell's second view, also appeared in 1906 with the same Nicholson/Elson imprint. Subsequently, Littig and Company of New York commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of many of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and both photogravures and lithographs were issued. The photogravures tend to have a much lower survival rate than the lithographed images, which were printed on heavier paper. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting that Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. Rummell's First University View? Of Rummell university views, the Yale and Harvard views are particular both in format and printing style. Unlike many Rummell university views, these early views appear in two formats, a sepia-toned photogravure copyrighted by F. D. Nichols of Boston and the lithograph view issued by Littig in New York. It is likely that the photogravure is earlier, as it often lacks a title (as here). These and other oddities suggest that the Yale view was the first university view Rummell published, and Harvard the second. Being a Brooklynite, Yale would have been one of the nearest and easiest universities to focus on as a prototype for the series. Of all Rummell's university views, it is further noteworthy that the Nichols / Elson / Rummell Yale view is one of the rarest to the market. In more recent times, many of the original lithographic plates for Rummell's college views have been rediscovered, leading to multiple modern reprints of the Littig editions, but the original lithograph printings and especially the photogravures, as here, have become extremely rare. Soft cover. 1st Edition. Very Good. Overall toning. Size 16.5 x 29 Inches. This is a scarce, 1910 Richard Rummell view of Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The sepia coloring of this print is consistent with other first editions of Rummell's views. The presence both of the Littig imprint and also Rummell's hand signature reinforces the assessment of this as a first edition. Moreover, the presence of only tracings of the view's title, just discernible in the bottom margin, indicates that it is likely a proof. Dickinson College's Historic Main Campus Founded in 1773 as Carlisle Grammar School, Dickinson would become in 1783 the first college to be founded after the formation of the United States - and at its foundation, the furthest west of any college in the country. The view is centered on the park at the juncture of West High Street and North West Street. Although the College has grown over the intervening century, this view of Dickinson's main campus displays Denny Hall, Old West and East College, and the Tome Scientific Building (renamed in 2001 the Stern Center). Also shown is Bosler Hall, prior to its midcentury renovations. Despite several college closings in its history, Dickinson remains active. Famous alumni include James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States; Roger Brooke Taney, the 5th chief justice of the United States; and Henry Clarke, developer of the Klondike Bar. At the turn of the century, Littig and Company commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. Although modern restrikes of Rummell's college views taken from the original printing plates can be found, the original printings have become extremely rare - particularly proof states such as this. We find no examples of the Dickinson College view in OCLC.…

Lithograph. Zustand: Fine. Lithograph. Modern framed with dark cherry wood, brushed gold trim, cream matte border. Full piece measures 20.5" x 33.5". Faint toning along upper edge of lithograph, otherwise a fine example. Richard Rummell (1848-1921) was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in London before immigrating to the United States. His campus illustrations, often created using copperplate etching, were commissioned by the New York firm, Littig & Company, between 1890 and 1915. He produced over 40 detailed campus views, including Michigan, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia. Rummell's works are notable for their meticulous detail and his technique of rendering bird's-eye views, as it required both artistic skill and an understanding of architectural design. This work includes the following landmarks at the University of Michigan: Detroit Observatory, Old Haven Hall, University Hall, Tappan Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall, the President's House and Newberry Hall. The University of Michigan by Richard Rummell, the hand-colored lithograph commissioned by Littig & Company in 1907. 1st Edition. Very good. Stabilized on archival tissue. Size 16 x 29.25 Inches. A rare 1911 Arthur J. Elder / Littig bird's-eye view map of the University of Kentucky - here in its first edition. This view is in the style of the more famous contemporaneous university viewmaker Richard Rummell and was published by Littig, also Rummell's publisher. It is one of only 4 known university views drawn by Elder. A Closer Look The view looks south on the University of Kentucky from a high point above the intersection of Administration Drive and South Limestone, suggesting the view was likely drawn from a balloon at about 300 feet in elevation. The Main Building is presented at center. Opened in 1882, this is the only surviving building of the university's four original structures. To the immediate right of the Main Building is UK's second oldest building, the Ezra Gillis Building, long known as the Chemistry Building. To the left is Barker Hall (1901), originally known as the Alumni Building, the later as the Old Gymnasium, and which today houses the school's Army and Air Force ROTC programs. Another recognizable building, Miller Hall (1898), originally known as Science Hall, appears just behind the Main Building. At the far left, the school's first athletic field is evident - this area is not a parking lot. Rummell or Elder? Such university views are more commonly associated with the landscape artist Richard Rummell, who produced dozens for Littig. The views were based on watercolors uniformly drawn from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting a hot-air balloon. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and a limited number of engravings were issued. Until discovering this view, we assumed that all similar views were by Rummell, but it seems that the views were in such demand that Littig hired other artists to sketch schools in different parts of the country. We know Elder produced at least 4 views, but possibly more. University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky (UK), located in Lexington, Kentucky, was founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky. It was part of the Morrill Land-Grant Act, passed by Congress to promote education in agriculture, engineering, and mechanical arts. Originally affiliated with Kentucky University (Transylvania University), it became a separate institution in 1878. UK has since become a major research center focusing on medicine, engineering, and agriculture. Publication History and Census This view was drawn by Arthur J. Elder and published in 1911 by W. T. Litting and Company. We note at least two variants: the present example, which is almost certainly the first edition, and a second that has additional text below the main map. Scarce.…

Very good. Exhibits light toning and soiling. Size 17.5 x 28.25 Inches. This is a c. 1913 Richard Rummell view of Smith College, a private liberal arts women's college in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is one of the few Rummell views to represent a women's college, and the only example we've seen. A Closer Look Founded in 1875, Smith College is the largest member of the Seven Sisters collegiate league. Looking west over the campus from the intersection of Elm Street and West Street, College Hall, Smith's first building, appears front and center. To the left of College Hall, some of the buildings still standing on campus include Pierce Hall, Seelye Hall, Lilly Hall, Alumnae Gym, Lawrence House, Morris House, Tyler House, and Neilson Library. Forbes Library, which houses the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library today, appears in the lower left. Identifiable buildings to the right of College Hall include Dewey Hall, Stoddard Hall, and Gillett House. St. John's Episcopal Church, which is not affiliated with Smith College, is also illustrated. Rummel prints were reproduced extensively, but original printings, as here, have become extremely rare. There is no additional imprint, but this was likely issued by Littig or Elson. This is the first time we have encountered Rummell's view of Smith College.…

Excellent. Slight rippling to sheet, else a fine, bright example. Size 17 x 30 Inches. This is a scarce 1906 Richard Rummell view of Princeton University, in a brilliant full-color example. This is the earlier of two views of the campus Rummell produced. A Closer Look Overlooking campus from a point high above today's Rockefeller College and Nassau Street, Alexander Hall and Maclean House appear immediately on the left. On the right, the first recognizable buildings are Blair and Buyers Halls and the Blair Arch. The old Halstead Observatory appears in front of Blair Hall, which is where Joline Hall stands today. Witherspoon Hall appears immediately behind the Blair Arch. Edwards Hall is partially blocked by Witherspoon Hall and Edwards does the same thing to Dod Hall. Both Little Hall and the Dillon Gym appear to the right of Edwards and Dod, and Princeton's railroad station adorns the right border with several horse-drawn carriages waiting. Returning to Alexander Hall at the center, Stanhope Hall is blocked by trees and Nassau Hall with its iconic belfry. East Payne Hall and Chancellor Green, then Princeton's library, are to the left of Nassau Hall. Dodge Hall appears to the right of East Payne Hall and McCosh Hall is illustrated to the left and behind both Didge Hall and East Payne Hall. 1879 Hall is recognizable in the background on the left. Publication History and Census This is the first of Rummell's views of Princeton, drawn no earlier than 1906. It was commissioned and printed by Littig Company of New York, but printings were also executed by Boston's A.W. Elson and Co. We have seen modern restrikes from the original Littig plates; we can be confident this is not one of these, as the restrikes bear the Littig imprint (absent here). References: OCLC 54650256.
