Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Philip Pullman, author of 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, has remarked that 'after nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.' This new collection of Rumi stories fills that need. This fresh prose translation of 105 short teaching stories by Rumi, which form the core of the six-volume Masnavi, explores the hidden spiritual aspects of everyday experience. Rumi transforms the seemingly mundane events of daily life into profound Sufi teaching moments. These prose gems open the mystical portal to the world of the ancient mystic. These stories include well-known and popular tales such as 'Angel of Death,' 'The Sufi and His Cheating Wife,' 'Moses and the Shepherd,' 'Chickpeas,' and 'The Greek and Chinese Painters' as well as the less commonly quoted parables: 'The Basket Weaver,' 'The Mud Eater,' and 'A Sackful of Pebbles.' Rumi's voice alternates between playful and authoritative, whether he is telling stories of ordinary lives or inviting the discerning reader to higher levels of introspection and attainment of transcendent values. Mafi's translations delicately reflect the nuances of Rumi's poetry while retaining the positive tone of all of Rumi's writings, as well as the sense of suspense and drama that mark the essence of the Masnavi.…

A beautiful and large, elegantly lithographed Masnavi, one of the most influential works of Sufism. The book was published in Tehran, today one of the under-appreciated centers of lithography. - The Masnavi (Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi, also spelt Mathnawi) is a famous, extensive Persian poem by Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi, known as Rumi. Often called "the Quran in Persian", it has been viewed by many commentators as the greatest mystical poem in world literature. A spiritual text that teaches Sufis how to reach their goal of truly loving God, its six books together amount to some 25,000 verses or 50,000 lines. Each book consists of about 4,000 verses and contains its own prose introduction and prologue. - The Masnavi was begun by Rumi during the final years of his life: he began dictating the first book around the age of 54, around the year 1258, and continued composing verses until his death in 1273; the sixth and final book would remain incomplete. Rumi is said to have dictating the verses of the Masnavi at the request of his favourite disciple, Husam al-Din Chalabi, who observed that many of Rumi's followers dutifully read the works of Sana'i and 'Attar. Thus, Rumi began creating a work in the same didactic style to complement his other poetry. The inconclusive ending of the sixth volume has given rise to suggestions that the work was not complete at the time of Rumi's death and claims about the existence of another volume. - The Persian text was printed for the first time in Bulaq (1835) in six volumes. Another edition appeared at Tabriz as "Masnavi-ye Rumi" in 1264 (1847) and then in Bombay in 1266/67 (1850/51), followed by numerous other Bombay editions throughout the 19th century, some including commentaries. A lithograph was made by Nawal Kishore in Lucknow in 1865, and editions were also printed in Tehran (1273/1856) and in Istanbul (1289/1872). From then until the end of the century, some twenty editions or reprints were made in the Middle East and India. - A rare edition, with no other copy listed in auction records. Seven examples can be traced in institutional libraries: in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, University of Cambridge, Columbia University, Harvard College Library, University of Michigan, Bibliothèque de Genève, and Princeton. - Insignificant browning; corners sporadically miscut by the binder. Old annotation in Arabic, dated 1918, on the last page. Binding slightly age-toned, but professionally repaired and in very good condition. - OCLC 234383069.…
