Good copy. "Taking it all in all, my career has not been a very eventful one. My life in India was most pleasant and enjoyable, the climate agreed with me, and there were hardly any drawbacks. My regret was in having to leave the service when I did." The attentive reader will constantly recall this statement in bafflement as he progresses through the book. Chapters include: Early incidents; A few anecdotes; Delhi, Mooltan, Seetapore; Outbreak of Mutiny; Siege of Lucknow; Continuation of siege; Incidents during the siege; Further incidents; Arrival of relieving force; China, 1860-1861; India again; Bhootan; Simla; Tulla Gaon and Cashmere; Home again. Although "Home again" is nearly all about Cashmere, the very end of the book does see Ruggles' return to Liverpool after seventeen years away. A good read, and like most books in this genre, very instructive. .
