Now we know that Judge Roy Bean did not sign this book as he died in 1903. This book is a first edition published in 1936 by Southern Publishers (Kingsport, Tennessee). There is a composer named Ross Hoyt and a brigadier general named Ross Hoyt. Was it one of theirs? Possibly. We are not sure. The book itself is in VERY GOOD condition. (BR) 340.

Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. There are no hinge issues, nothing torn or loose. The front and rear pastedowns stamped "Property of O. R. McGuire". Colonel O. R. McGuire was the chairman of the committee on administrative law of the American Bar Association, and author of "Americans on Guard", a series of addresses in defense of the conservative interpretation of our constitutional system. The front end page contains an inscription which reads: "To R. R. McGuire, Frontier law may be crude but it has some interest to those who like the history as well as the practice of the law. I hope you will enjoy this story of the Southwest. David A. Simmons, Feb 1, 1939". David Andrew Simmons served as assistant U. S. attorney, as attorney general of Texas, president of the Houston-Galveston Bar Association and of the Texas Bar Association, and a member of the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association. No other handwriting found in the book. Binding is tight pages are firm/square. Paper is toned due to age and there is a bit of light foxing and spotting present.

Although not credited as a source for the film, evidently the publisher and Samuel Goldwyn/United Artists had an arrangement to promote the film by placing new jackets on stock copies of the first edition. Scarce in this condition.
