Decorative Silk. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Volume VIII. A.D. 1438-1516. Bright orange silk with elaborate decoration in gilt. Top edge gilt. 400 pp. Engraved frontispiece vignette. Binding a facsimile of an original in the British Museum, executed by about 1710 by Antoine Michel Padeloup, Royal Binder of both France and… Portugal. He presented it to Francoise Marie de Bourbon, daughter of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, on the anniversary of her marriage to Philippe, Duke of Orleans, who afterward became Regent of France. Part of limited edition (limitation/numbering only in Volume I, but it is 752/1000). Spine faded, fade marks and chip to rear board, spine cloth dry and chipped at top. Internals clean and crisp, sound hinges. Very good. Illustrated (illustrator).

Topics include Gallipoli, the Lusitania, the Armenian massacres, the First Gas Attack at Ypres, the Serbian retreat, and the widening conflict between Germany and the United States. Volume V is bound in a facsimile of a royal binding executed by Thomas Berthelet for Edward VI and documents the development of medieval Europe, including feudalism, the Norman Conquest, the First Crusade, the Christianization of Russia, and Leif Erikson's discovery of America. Contents clean, bright, and unmarked. Bindings remain sound and square. Boards remain attractive with bright gilt decoration. Minor shelf wear to corners and spine ends.
