Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Beautifully written and important.Martinez shows us how 'America' is being reimagined by its uninvited, its disrespected, its invisible, and he shows us that they will change us, whether we like it or not.--Los Angeles Times In the decade since Crossing Over first appeared, immigration from Mexico has only become more fraught and more lethal, the rallying cry of nativist politics and a pawn in the war on terror. Yet the U.S.-Mexican border remains one of the most permeable boundaries in the world, breached daily by Mexicans in search of work. Thousands die crossing the line, and those who reach the other side are branded illegals, undocumented and unprotected. Following the emigration of the Ch vez clan, an extended Mexican family who lost three sons in a tragic border accident, Rub n Mart nez traces the migrants' progress from their small southern Mexican town of Cher n to California, Wisconsin, and Missouri. Far from joining the melting pot, Mart nez argues, the seven million migrants who are now here are creating a new Hispanic-influenced culture that is dramatically altering both Mexico and the United States. Hailed as valuable, passionate, and terrific, Crossing Over puts a human face on the phenomenon of Mexican immigration and the vibrant Latino culture it introduces to the U.S., and remains a beautifully written classic of our time. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Powerful Story of Surviving Death Camps My Stormy Youth presents the Yiddish-translated memoirs of Holocaust survivor Mr. Norman Kamelgard, a 74 year old New Jersey resident born in Poland. Mr. Kamelgard's somber account of Nazi occupied Poland, transformed from a cultural Mecca to desolate slave-labor ghettos, traces his family's fate from preWar posterity to death in the concentration camp. His miraculous survival and emigration to Israel encountered further resistance from British authorities, who imprisoned him for bypassing entry procedures and thinking he was a terrorist. Kamelgard's poignant story captures the profound tragedies forever imprinted in Shoa survivors. Like other survivors, his broken dreams of childhood passionately call attention to the enigma of War and futility of genocide. Sixty-two years after Kristallnacht, Norman Kamelgard found inspiration to publish his memories, first written while a British prisoner. Later he contacted a friend who translated the entire Yiddish version into English. Then, through the serendipity of contacting a Michigan cousin, he learned of the editor, another cousin and psychologist of several books. Parts of My Stormy Youth inspired footage in Director Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is a book for dedicated academics who consider spending years masochistically overworked and underappreciated as a laudable goal. They lead the lives of the impoverished, grade the exams of whiny undergrads, and spend lonely nights in the library or laboratory pursuing a transcendent truth that only six or seven people will ever care about. These suffering, unshaven sad sacks are grad students, and their salvation has arrived in this witty look at the low points of grad school. Inside, you'll find: * advice on maintaining a veneer of productivity in front of your advisor * tips for sleeping upright during boring seminars * a description of how to find which departmental events have the best unguarded free food * how you can convincingly fudge data and feign progress This hilarious guide to surviving and thriving as the lowliest of life-forms--the grad student--will elaborate on all of these issues and more.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Pinball's history is America's history, from gambling and war-themed machines to the arcade revolution and, ultimately, the decline of the need to leave your house. The strangest thing about pinball is that it persists, and not just as nostalgia. And pinball didn't just stick around--it grew and continues to evolve with the times, reflecting the zeitgeist of every era it passes through. Somehow, in today's iPhone world, a 300-pound monstrosity of wood and cables has survived to enjoy yet another renaissance. Pinball is more to humor writer Adam Ruben than a fascinating book topic--it's a lifelong obsession. Ruben played competitive pinball for more than a decade, rising as high as the 80th-ranked player in the world. Then he had kids. Now, mired in 9,938th place--darn kids--Ruben tries to stage a comeback, visiting pinball museums, gaming conventions, pinball machine designers, and even pinball factories in his attempt to discover what makes the world's best players, the real wizards, so good. Pinball competitions are on the rise, thanks in part to modern phenomena, like "nostalgia bars," with several hundred International Flipper Pinball Association-sanctioned events occurring annually--yet they're only a small corner of the pinball world. Pinball Wizards examines the bigger story of pinball's invention, ascent, near-defeat, resurgence, near-defeat again, and struggle to find its niche in modern society.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. From the critically acclaimed author of There Is a Rio Grande in Heaven, a piercing debut novel following two families in alternative timelines of the Salvadoran civil war--a stunning exploration of the mechanisms of fate, the gravity of the past, and the endurance of love. "Beautiful." --LA Times, A Must-Read Book for Summer "Luminous." --People, A Best Book of July Cambridge, 2018. Ana and Luis's relationship is on the rocks, despite their many similarities, including their mothers who both fled El Salvador during the war. In her search for answers, and against her best judgement, Ana uses The Defractor, an experimental device that allows users to peek into alternate versions of their lives. What she sees leads her and Luis on a quest through Havana and San Salvador to uncover the family histories they are desperate to know, eager to learn if what might have been could fix what is. Havana, 1978. The Salvadoran war is brewing, and Neto, a young revolutionary with a knack for forging government papers, meets Rafael at a meeting for the People's Revolutionary Army. The two form an intense and forbidden love, shedding their fake names and revealing themselves to each other inside the covert world of their activism. When their work separates them, they begin to exchange weekly letters, but soon, as the devastating war rages on, forces beyond their control threaten to pull them apart forever. Ruben Reyes Jr.'s debut novel is an epic, genre-bending journey through inverted worlds--one where war ends with a peace treaty, and one where it ends with a decisive victory by the Salvadoran government. What unfolds is a stunning story of displacement and belonging, of loss and love. It's both a daring imagining of what might have been and a powerful reckoning of our past.…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. When Ruben Cavazos changed his clothes at daybreak, he was no longer a CAT scan technician at the University of Southern California Medical Center. He became the man known--and, in a few special cases, feared--as Doc, international president of the Mongols, the fastest-growing and most closely watched organization of its kind in the United States. In reality, the Mongols are a tightly knit band of brothers devoted in equal measure to their club, their fellow Mongols, and their freedom. They live to enjoy life, party, and travel the open road. Above all, they demand respect. When pushed too far, Mongols join together to push back. Just ask the Hells Angels, the Ukrainian mafia, the Mexican mafia, and the U.S. government, all of whom have tested the Mongols' resolve. In Honor Few, Fear None, Doc is ready, for the first time, to share the stories of the Mongols' continuing battle to survive and thrive against incredible odds--and sometimes terrible violence.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Mexican immigration to the United States--the oldest and largest immigration movement to this country--is in the midst of a fundamental transformation. For decades, Mexican immigration was primarily a border phenomenon, confined to Southwestern states. But legal changes in the mid-1980s paved the way for Mexican migrants to settle in parts of America that had no previous exposure to people of Mexican heritage. In New Destinations, editors Víctor Zúñiga and Rubén Hernández-León bring together an inter-disciplinary team of scholars to examine demographic, social, cultural, and political changes in areas where the incorporation of Mexican migrants has deeply changed the preexisting ethnic landscape. New Destinations looks at several of the communities where Mexican migrants are beginning to settle, and documents how the latest arrivals are reshaping--and being reshaped by--these new areas of settlement. Contributors Jorge Durand, Douglas Massey, and Chiara Capoferro use census data to diagram the historical evolution of Mexican immigration to the United States, noting the demographic, economic, and legal factors that led recent immigrants to move to areas where few of their predecessors had settled. Looking at two towns in Southern Louisiana, contributors Katharine Donato, Melissa Stainback, and Carl Bankston III reach a surprising conclusion: that documented immigrant workers did a poorer job of integrating into the local culture than their undocumented peers. They attribute this counterintuitive finding to documentation policies, which helped intensify employer control over migrants and undercut the formation of a stable migrant community among documented workers. Brian Rich and Marta Miranda detail an ambivalent mixture of paternalism and xenophobia by local residents toward migrants in Lexington, Kentucky. The new arrivals were welcomed for their strong work ethic so long as they stayed in "invisible" spheres such as fieldwork, but were resented once they began to take part in more public activities like schools or town meetings. New Destinations also provides some hopeful examples of progress in community relations. Several chapters, including Mark Grey and Anne Woodrick's examination of a small Iowa town, point to the importance of dialogue and mediation in establishing amicable relations between ethnic groups in newly multi-cultural settings. New Destinations is the first scholarly assessment of Mexican migrants' experience in the Midwest, Northeast, and deep South--the latest settlement points for America's largest immigrant group. Enriched by perspectives from demographers, anthropologists, sociologists, folklorists, and political scientists, this volume is an essential starting point for scholarship on the new Mexican migration.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. From the Arizona Congressman, a "powerful" and "searing" (PW) chronicle of the eternal bonds forged between the Marines of Lima Company, the hardest-hit unit of the Iraq WarAt first, they were ?Lucky Lima.? Infantryman Ruben Gallego and his brothers in Lima Company?3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, young men drawn from blue-collar towns, immigrant households, Navajo reservations?returned unscathed on patrol after patrol through the increasingly violent al Anbar region of Iraq, looking for weapons caches and insurgents trying to destabilize the nascent Iraqi government. After two months in Iraq, Lima didn't have a casualty, not a single Purple Heart, no injury worse than a blister. Lucky Lima. Then, in May 2005, Lima?s fortunes flipped. Unknown to Ruben and his fellow grunts, al Anbar had recently become a haven for al Qaeda in Mesopotamia. The bin Laden-sponsored group had recruited radicals from all over the world for jihad against the Americans. On one fateful day, they were lured into a death house; the ambush cost the lives of two men, including a platoon sergeant. Two days later, Ruben?s best friend, Jonathon Grant, died in an IED attack, along with several others. Events worsened from there. A disastrous operation in Haditha in August claimed the lives of thirteen Marines when an IED destroyed their amphibious vehicle. It was the worst single-day loss for the Marines since the 1983 Beirut bombings. By the time 3/25 went home in November, it had lost more men than any other single unit in the war. Forty-six Marines and two Navy Corpsmen serving with the battalion in Iraq were killed in action during their roughly nine-month activation. They Called Us ?Lucky? details Ruben Gallego?s journey and includes harrowing accounts of some of the war?s most costly battles. It details the struggles and the successes of Ruben?now a member of Congress?and the rest of Lima Company following Iraq, examining the complicated matter of PTSD. And it serves as a tribute to Ruben?s fallen comrades, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. With its gripping accounts of some of the war's most costly battles, They Called Us 'Lucky' is a must-read for anyone interested in military history and the politics of war. It offers a firsthand perspective on the Iraq War and the struggles faced by soldiers like Ruben Gallego, who served in the hardest hit company of the hardest hit battalion of the war and occupation.…
