In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Good. Two very rare documents, (2), (2)pp, each printed on official British Government Crown and Stationery Office (SO) watermarked foolscap. Good with single horizontal fold, creased and tanned with some spotting and a couple of short closed tears. Undated c1941-42. No author or publisher is indicated, but…they appear to have been issued as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, also known as the Empire Air Training Scheme, or "The Plan". This remains the largest scheme of its kind, covering almost half the pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, air gunners, wireless operators and flight engineers in the RAF, Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, RAAF, RCAF, and RNZAF. Parallel to this, the South African Air Force ran a programme for its own aircrew and other Allied air forces. This pair of cross-referring notes informs pilots about dust and sandstorms encountered along the route to India via the Western (Libyan) Desert, Arabia and the Gulf. NOTE 2 explains the conditions necessary for these to occur in the Western Desert, with Mediterranean cold fronts being the "the most frequent cause", and various types of depressions including over Palestine and Syria. NOTE 3 adds observations on sandstorms in Winter, Spring and Summer driven by the switch between the NE and SW Monsoon over the Arabian Sea and India, the Shamal over western Persia, the Sirocco over Palestine, Syria and western Iraq, etc. Sandstorms can extend further east along the route to Persia and Baluchistan, while dust haze extends SE over the Gulf to Bahrain and possibly beyond. Grieve, Thomas; William Telbin; John Absolon; J.F. Herring; H. Weir (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbThe ten letters total 4pp., landscape 8vo, and 6pp., 4to. The collection in good condition, lightly aged and worn. With stamps and annotations of the Royal Society of Arts. The correspondence relates to a lecture given by him by invitation, and its subsequent publication in the Society's journal. He originally suggests that it b…e titled 'The Application of Science to economic purposes, with illustrations from the Cotton Trade', thinking that it would 'attract people outside cotton circles', but is persuaded to alter this to 'Examples of Applied Science in the Cotton Industry'. Before giving the lecture he writes (15 January 1918): 'I never write up a paper before giving it, except under compulsion, and then it is different! Do you keep a stenographer?'.

In den WarenkorbSee the entries for Dicksee and Lady Orchardson's husband Sir William Quiller Orchardson (1832-1910), RA, in the Oxford DNB. Lady Orchardson (1853-1917) was the daughter of the London publisher Charles Moxon. The Orchardsons married in 1873. Among their four children was the painter Charles Moxon Quiller Orchardson (1873-1917),…who studied in the Royal Academy Schools and was killed in action during World War One. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed 'Frank Dicksee'. Begins: 'Dear Lady Orchardson - / I am so very sorry that I missed seeing you when you called on Sunday. I should have written sooner - but thought I would wait until after the Committee meeting [for the Royal Academy summer exhibtion] this afternoon'. He felt that committee would 'all desire to see the bust by Onslow Ford included in the Exhibition - & that I need hardly say is the case'. Nearly all the pictures have been 'sent in', and they will have 'a very fine show but we shall miss some we should dearly like to have'. The ODNB also has an entry for the sculptor Edward Onslow Ford (1852-1901), who participated in several Royal Academy summer exhibitions.

In den WarenkorbFull subtitle: 'With a comparative review of the systems proposed by H. Cranmer Phillipps, R.N. and by Captain Levin Joergen Rohde, of the Royal Danish Navy, Knight of the Dannebrog, &c. &c.' The letter was previously attached by four small pieces of red sealing wax on the verso of its blank second leaf to the title-page of the…pamphlet. Letter and pamphlet are now detached, with traces of wax adhering to both, but not affecting the text of either. LETTER: 12mo, one page. Good on aged paper. Addressed to Sir William Symonds (1782-1856), Surveyor of the Navy, naval architect and rear admiral. He troubled Symonds the previous summer with 'a book upon naval signals'. 'The appearance of another work upon the same subject has induced me to write the accompanying little tract, which perhaps you may find time to glance over. I am only anxious for a fair trial of my system.' PAMPHLET: octavo, thirty pages. Several illustrations of flags. Disbound. Aged and creased. Cropped ownership inscription of 'W. Symonds R.N.' at head of title. The pamphlet performs 'the disagreeable, and perhaps somewhat invidious task, of pointing out the more prominent defects in Captain Rohdes' system', and contrasts it with 'his own plan', ending with four pages of 'NUMERAL SIGNALS. [.] The Numbers to be shewn over A WHEFT.'.

In den WarenkorbThe seven items in good condition, on lightly-aged and worn paper. With stamps of the Royal Society of Arts. The letter to Perry is a typed report of 2pp., folio, and more heavily worn than the rest of the correspondence. It is dated 11 August 1936, and discusses 'schemes similar to Sandersons [.] in which a firm offers work exp…erience as part of a course taken by full-time students not previously employed in industry' and 'part-time release'. He discusses the only two cases of 'works experience': the first at Keighley with Messrs Stapley's, and the second between Messrs Courtaulds and the Central School of Arts and Crafts. There are also references to 'Sir Thomas Barlow who took two students of Salford School of Art into his works', Stourbridge, Pick, Vidgen-Jenks, Leicester, and Hull College. Luckhurst's three TLsS, two ALsS and ANS (totalling 4pp., 4to; 2pp., 12mo) continue the same theme in relation to the Society's business, with references to the Keighley Art School, 'the unrevised report of Miss Richardson's talk', the Industrial Art Bursaries Board, 'the Distribution of Diplomas by the Duke of Gloucester', and 'the sub-committee which is to administer the Travelling Bursary for a teacher of art generously provided by Mr. Sanderson'.
