Paperback. Zustand: Good. Gripping, meticulously researched, and smartly plotted, I devoured this brilliant novel over the course of a weekend. --Paula Hawkins, author of Into the Water Fascinating, moving, and so very, very real. It grabbed me by the heart and mind from page one and never let me go. --Marcia Clark, author of The Final Judgment An electrifying, multi-voiced thriller tackling our criminal justice system, from the writer Michael Connelly has called one of our most gifted novelists. On December 6, 1993, a drug dealer called Scrappy is shot and left for dead on the lawn outside her mother's house in South Central Los Angeles. Augie, a heroin addict, witnesses the whole thing--before he steals all the drugs on her person, as well as the gun that was dropped at the scene. When Augie gets busted, he names local gang members Wizard and Dreamer the shooters. But only one of them is guilty. A search of Wizard and Dreamer's premises uncovers the gun that was used in the shooting, and a warrant goes out for their arrest. They know it's a frame-up, but the word from the gang is to keep their mouths shut and face the charges. With these two off the streets and headed for jail, Dreamer's friend Little, the unlikeliest of new gang members, is given one job: discover how the gun got moved, and why. Played out in the streets, precincts, jails, and courtrooms of Los Angeles, Ryan Gattis's The System is the harrowing story of a crime--from moments before the bullets are fired, to the verdict and its violent aftershocks--told through the vivid chorus of those involved, guilty, the innocent, and everyone in between.…

In den WarenkorbPleistocene faunas of the eastern Pacific shelf are characterized by thermally anomalous species assemblages - i.e., coexisting species that inhabit different climatic regimes today. We used data on the latitudinal ranges of 2887 extant molluscan species to determine the biological basis of the Pleistocene faunal migrations. Overall, the species exhibiting the most extensive range shifts (termed extraprovincial species) were not drawn randomly from the available species pool, and the pattern is climatically asymmetrical. The latitudinal ranges of southern extraprovincial species are significantly wider on average than those of the species pool from which they were drawn, but the ranges of northern extraprovincials resemble those of their parent pool. This contrast is primarily a consequence of the biogeographic structure of the eastern Pacific fauna; water-mass boundaries are more effective barriers for southern species migrating north in response to changing climatic conditions than for northern species moving south. Our analysis of Pleistocene marine mollusks provides a biological and environmental context for species response to environmental change and permits predictions about the movement of eastern Pacific species relative to major environmental barriers in the face of future global change. 4 pp., 2 figs, 4.…

That tradition is vividly portrayed in Gardens of Georgia, commissioned by the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., to commemorate its sixtieth anniversary and to celebrate the heritage and beauty of Georgia's gardens. As noted by Georgia founder James Oglethorpe in 1732, Georgia has a happy climate. From the broad-shouldered mountains of the Blue Ridge, through the red clay of the rolling piedmont, across the sprawling piney coastal plain, and on to the subtropical islands on the Atlantic, Georgia is blessed with four regions of gardening opportunities, distinctly defined by differences in elevation, climate, soil, and natural vegetation.Writer William Mitchell and photographer Richard Moore have portrayed the wonders of gardens historic and contemporary, public and private, and urban, suburban, and rural from each of these regions. Whether illustrating overall gardenscapes or capturing intimate vignettes and individual blossoms, Richard Moore's photographs have a depth of color and clarity of detail that immerse the reader into a world of delightful splendor. The text by Willaim Mitchell not only describes the settings as they are today, but also spins a rich background of history in the context of the botanical Eden observed by early explorers. The richest legacy of each generation is to preserve and protect an always vulnerable natural environment and help nature bring forth its green and glowing cycles of rebirth. Gardens of Georgia celebrates that legacy, sharing the ongoing dream of paradise--a new Eden--whether it is in a grand formal garden from an earlier era or a small plot of perennials in a Georgia yard. ; FINE/FINE.
