First Rowlandson edition. Royal octavo, two-volumes, pp., viii, 295, [5] index; [2], 296, [8] index. Complete hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and title-page plus, 72 further hand-coloured aquatints divided between both volumes, designed and etched by Rowlandson. Uniformly bound in contemporary diced Russia, titled and ornamented in gilt to spines, double fillets in gilt to boards, gilt rolls to edges; all edges marbled; marbled end-papers; red silk place-markers to both volumes. Armorial bookplate of Benjamin Chapman of Killua Castle to front paste-down of both volumes. Some rubbing to extremities, joints slightly worn, top edges a little dusty. Contents clean and fresh. A very good set, handsomely bound. The celebrated first Rowlandson edition of one of Combe's comical poems written for the illustrator, for which he is still best known. Unlike previous 'Dance of Death' works, Rowlandson drew both from the macabre and the familiar, drawing on images and characters from Regency life. The book is firmly in the firmament of the Rowlandson canon 'The illustrations nearly excel all his other work' (Hardie 172). 'Indispensable to any Rowlandson collection, one of the essential pivots of any colour plate library, being one of the main works of Rowlandson' (Tooley 334). Sir Benjamin James Chapman, 4th Baronet (1810 - 1888) was MP and High-Sheriff for Westmeath in Ireland and the great uncle of T. E. Lawrence. An attractive copy of one of Rowlandson's most famous works. Hardie, English Coloured Books, pp., 171-2; Tooley, Coloured Plates, 411; Grolier, Rowlandson, 32.

First editions. The Tours follow the amusing misadventures of the titular character, a foolish clergyman and schoolmaster, and satirize contemporary travel writing. Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827) created the vivid, caricature-style illustrations of Dr Syntax's various mishaps, and William Coombe (1742-1823) composed the narrative poems that accompany them. Dr Syntax first appeared in Ackermann's Poetical Magazine in 1809. The character is based on the artist, cleric and travel writer William Gilpin (1724-1804). In his 1768 Essay on Prints, Gilpin defined the picturesque as "a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture" (p. 2). His writing encouraged amateur artists to travel in search of picturesque vistas to reproduce. Coombe mocks such as activities: "His pencil too perfom'd its duty / In sketching many a landscape beauty / Scarce rose a cot within the bound / That his dominion did surround / Whose whiten'd walls did not impart / Some bounty on the Doctor's art". During his early career as an artist, Rowlandson travelled extensively through Britain and Continental Europe, producing a mix of caricatures and the style landscape painting mocked in the Tours. At the beginning of the 19th century, he moved into book and magazine illustration and was primarily employed by Rudolph Ackermann. His work demonstrates his vast range. He was "as much a master of the lyrical watercolour of rolling countryside as of the incisive caricature". The latter, seen here, is "marked by brilliant draughtsmanship and acute observation of stance, movement, and character" (ODNB). Houfe, p. 285. Two works, (257 x 166 mm), large octavo in half-sheets. 24 coloured aquatint plates in each vol., tissue guards in Third Tour, woodcut vignette to p. [51] of Second Tour, aquatint title page and vignette tailpiece in Third Tour. Contemporary red straight-grain half morocco, spines flat, lettered in gilt with gilt and blind tooling, marbled sides and endpapers, all edges untrimmed. Spots of wear to board edges and corners, covers a little rubbed, occasional offsetting from plates, well-margined: in very good condition.

First edition of "one of the essential pivots of any colour plate library", a work "indispensable to any Rowlandson collection" (Tooley). It was part of a wave of modern interpretations of the Dance reinvigorated by a return to Holbein's satiric impulse. Rowlandson's vivacious plates depict a particularly vindictive figure of Death. Holbein's 1538 designs "may have inspired Rowlandson but in his Dance of Death he takes his characters from the world round him, sees them in his own original way, and imparts to the subject his own satirical humour, with its curious combination of the sublime and the ludicrous. The union of the gruesome and the grotesque appealed strongly to his imagination, and in completeness of detail and carefulness of grouping the illustrations excel nearly all his other work" (Hardie). The accompanying text by William Combe (1742-1823), one of a series of comic poems written for Rowlandson and for which he is still most famous, is "full of wit and vigour" (ibid.). Published in 24 monthly numbers it was issued in two volumes in boards upon completion. Abbey 263, Hardie 171-172; Ray 35; Tooley pp. 332-334. Dancing with Death. The Origins and Development of the Dance of Death Motif and its Representation in Graphic Art: The Gemmell Collection at the University of Glasgow Library, accessible online. 2 vols, large octavo (228 x 142 mm), pp. 296; 300. Frontispiece, title page, and 72 aquatint plates, all finely hand-coloured. Contemporary quarter calf, spine lettered in gilt, marbled paper sides, pale green endpapers, edges speckled green. Bookplate of Swedish travel writer Carl D. Arfwedson. Spines skinned, bindings rubbed, wear to edges, slight browning to endpapers, offsetting from plates, hand-colouring clean, paper reinforcement to fore edge of vol. II title page: a very good copy.

First Rowlandson edition. Goldsmith's novel was first published in 1766. The publisher's introduction notes that the novel's "pictures of human nature, the virtues it inculcates, and the continuing interest of its story, must always render it a favourite with the good; and will consequently justify the expense which has been bestowed upon this edition of it". Octavo (235 x 142 mm). 24 hand-coloured aquatints by Thomas Rowlandson. Early 20th-century half brown crushed morocco by Bayntun, raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, decorations to compartments, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Spine very slightly faded, occasional minor wear to extremities, minor foxing and browning: a near-fine copy.

Mixed set, with ninth edition of vol. I and stated third edition of vols II-III. Octavo (26cm). Uniformly bound in mid-century orange cloth, stamped in blind on boards and gilt on spines, top edges gilt; pale yellow endpapers; I: [iv],[iv],276pp; II: [vi],277,[1]pp; III: [iv],279,[1]pp; illustrated with hand-colored aquatints, vol. I with 31 plates including frontispiece and engraved title page, vol. II with 24 plates including frontis. (but without engraved t.p., as issued), vol. III with 26 plates including frontis., t.p., and concluding vignette. Binder's ticket of Remnant & Edmonds at rear. Bookplates of Robert Arthur Blane in each volume, with 1849 gift inscription to Blane in vol. I. A straight set, largely sound, cloth rubbed and dustsoiled, corners bumped, vol. I chipped at head; internally with some offsetting and fingersoil, a few plates browned or foxed, and one gathering pulled, but most plates bright and fresh: Very Good. Likely an 1840s issue of this popular comic poem (note that all three volumes state "third edition" on title page, but vol. I also states eighth edition on the engraved title page, and includes the advertisement to the ninth edition). Combe's poems about Doctor Syntax combined "lighthearted satire of William Gilpin's theory of the picturesque in art with a central character modelled on Cervantes' Don Quixote and Henry Fielding's Parson Adams" (ODNB). The works gave the illustrator, Thomas Rowlandson, "ample scope for the comic designs of which he was a master," and the aquatints in these books "were his greatest success as an illustrator" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914 p.27). Cf. RAY 34 for the first editions.
