Cette correspondance, qui s'ouvre en 1774, quand Constant avait sept ans, et ne se ferme qu'en décembre 1830, quelques jours avant sa mort et retrace l'histoire d'une existence merveilleusement riche en événements. On y voit successivement l'enfant précoce, l'adolescent rebelle, le chambellan à la Cour de Brunswick, le jeune auteur qui prend une part active à la vie politique du Directoire et du Consulat, le voyageur qui compose des ouvrages littéraires, philosophiques et historiques, et enfin l'homme public, tour à tour adversaire et collaborateur de Napoléon, à qui la Restauration fournit une carrière toute neuve, celle de publiciste, de député et de l'un des chefs du parti libéral. On y retrouve le romancier, le pamphlétaire, le journaliste et l'orateur; on observe les tourments de l'amoureux qui a besoin de passion mais horreur du lien. Ces lettres révèlent la complexité de son caractère et sa mobilité; mais on y reconnaît aussi la lucidité et la force de sa pensée, qu'il résume ainsi à la fn de sa vie: «J'ai défendu quarante ans le même principe, liberté en tout, en religion, en philosophie, en littérature, en industrie, en politique».

Ses discours et articles sont peu appréciés par le gouvernement et, en août 1822, il se voit impliqué dans les suites de l'affaire du général Berton : accusé de complicité, il se défend contre ses accusateurs, mais sera condamné à des peines d'amende. Il subit en novembre un échec électoral, sans que son activité de publiciste ne faiblisse pour autant. Son éloignement de la Chambre des députés lui permet même de reprendre son travail sur d'autres projets, notamment la suite de son Commentaire sur l'ouvrage de Filangieri (dont la première partie date de mars 1821) et son grand ouvrage De la religion, dont le premier volume sera publié en 1824. Le présent volume, comme les précédents, constitue un précieux document sur la vie intellectuelle et politique de l'époque ainsi que sur les rapports de Constant avec ses amis et sa famille.
