Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First edition. Fine in fine dust jacket. First printing. Hardcover. 463 pp. with bibliography, index. In 1973, Federal District Judge Earl R. Larson issued a ruling in a patent case that was to have profound and long-lasting implications for the then-dawning computer r…evolution. Against expectations, the judge ruled against Sperry Rand Corp, which claimed to hold the patent for the first computer---dubbed ENIAC--- and was demanding huge royalties on all electronic data-processing sales by Honeywell and other large competitors. The judge found that in fact ENIAC was not the first computer but was derived from an obscure computer---called the ABC--which had developed in the late thirties by a largely unknown Iowa State University professor. This work cenetrs in detail on this crucial trial.

The descriptive diary of Alice Rowe on her journey from England to Australia with her husband, Harold Aldis. Her account features her experience travelling as an Australian immigrant in the early 20th century on RMS Orvieto, which she considers "a hotel 300ft long". Alice Jane Rowe (1883-1960) spent over a month aboard the ship,… and her daily entries offer an insight into its community, from the breakfast menu to a communion service held on the Red Sea on a warm day, which left "clergymen and people all mopping their faces". She discusses the frequent concerts and dances held, including a celebration for the coronation of George V and a fancy dress ball to commemorate the end of their voyage. Rowe is left remarking only a few days into her trip that it is "rather strange but (the) ship seems more like home to us now". On her cruise, Rowe passed through the Mediterranean and disembarked in Marseilles, Sicily, Naples, and Colombo. Much of her diary is dedicated to these excursions, mainly her trip to Colombo, where she visits a museum with whale remains, a temple of Buddha, and marketplaces. She recounts helping sickly passengers, such as on 26 June, when she cared for a "shivering" young mother and her baby. Rowe also describes assisting passengers through seasickness, often taking them to the sick bay herself. The diary concludes on 10 July with the author remarking, "I feel quite fit for landing many going off at Fremantle all excitement" before going to bed early to prepare for the landing the next day. Rowe and Harold John Aldis (1884-1948) were originally from Thorpe St Andrews in Norfolk, where Harold was a farmer. Upon their arrival in Fremantle, the couple moved to Perth, where they had four children, before moving back to England in 1917. Quarto (210 x 165 mm). Together, 49 pp. of neat manuscript in ink (remainder blank), 3 in pencil. Approximately 8,000 words. Original blue card wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. Covers creased and toned, small nicks to extremities, staples rusted with wrapper loosening, minor foxing: a very good example.
