Taken from the Journal of the Geographical Society of Berlin (Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft fur Erdkunde zu Berlin, Bd. XV, Taf. I). An 1880 issue of the journal "Nature" described this as "a fine new map". It shows Fayoum Oasis on a 1/200,000 scale, approximately centred on El Medineh with coverage bounded by the sands north of Birket-el-Qerun (NW) and Beni Suef (SE). Details include desert terrain, cultivated land, estates, settlements, small villages, shrines, buildings, railways, dismantled railways, stone embankments, railway stations, pyramids, and watermills, with text descriptions of the terrain in the image. An inset table transliterates Arabic sounds. Above the map is a corresponding Profile from the Nile to Birket-el-Qerun based on Rousseau Bey's measurements in 1871, showing levels above and below the mean level of the Mediterranean. This compares his adjustment for Birket-El-Qurun at -41.72 metres with Linant Pasha's of -29 metres, and shows the former and current levels of the lake (a drop of 50 metres), and its emerging island. Medinet-El-Fayum Railway Station is marked at +23.29 metres. Rousseau Bey was a French engineer working for the Egyptian Government at this time.
