Hommage respectueux de l'auteur [.]". - Interesting assessment of the impact of the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907, which regulated the spheres of influence over Afghanistan and Persia, with Britain controlling the entrance to the Gulf. It examines the growing influence of the British Empire in the Gulf region, particularly Bahrain, Kuwait and in Southern Arabia, before dealing with the geopolitics of Afghanistan, Tibet, and Persia, which was half under Russian and half under British influence. The work concludes with an analysis of the impact of the pact on both Muscat and Kuwait. Never translated into English; a Russian translation appeared in 1924. - Without the separately published lithographed map. First and sole edition of this timely and decidedly uncommon French overview of the Great Game, published in the wake of the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907; in the chapter entitled "L'Angleterre en Arabie", Rouire discusses British influence in the Arabian Gulf, with particular attention to Muscat, Kuwait, Bahrain, and southern Arabia. The convention of 1907 saw Britain and Russia settle their colonial disputes in Persia, Afghanistan, and Tibet. "It delineated spheres of influence in Persia, stipulated that neither country would interfere in Tibet's internal affairs, and recognized Britain's influence over Afghanistan. The agreement led to the formation of the Triple Entente" (Ency. Brit.). The French physician A. M. F. Rouire (1855-1917) wrote widely on geographical and historical subjects. La Rivalité Anglo-Russe is based on articles that he published over a five-year period in the French intellectual monthly Revue des Deux Mondes and includes chapters, aside from that already mentioned, on the British and Russians in Persia, Afghanistan, and Tibet, concluding with an examination of the 1907 treaty.
