Contemporary quarter sheep, green speckled boards, spine richly decorated in gilt with gilt-lettered morocco title label; corners worn. Author's enlarged and corrected second edition of his comprehensive handbook on dyeing wool, silk, linen, hemp, cotton and on printing of fabrics, known as 'calicoes', much appreciated, widely consulted, reviewed and translated. Vitalis was professor of chemistry and a minerologist at Rouen who published several works. The 1st part of his manual deals with basics: metals, salts, acids and oils; the 2nd part includes a detailed treatment of indigo and a description of colours and their components for dyeing textiles; the 3rd part is devoted to printing on fabrics. The manual was discussed in depth in Bancroft's Experimental Researches commenting on experiments of dyeing Turkey-red practised at Rouen by Pierre Jacques Papillon (II : pp185-197) and on the author's method of printing black on cotton and yarn (ii : p355). It was translated and updated in several German Editions. An exceptionally fine copy, initialed in ink by the author to confirm authenticity with contemporary ownership signatures of a textile printer in Tours ('Delaroche fab[riquant] à Tours') on half title and in inner blank margin of first page of text. The owner has added a manuscript index of chemical terms derived from the Greek in a clear hand at the end.

Reçu pour deux lettres confiées par Conrad Hanssen, consul d'Elseneur, pour le ministre de la Marine Antoine de Sartine. Ce document provenant des papiers de Jean-Jacques Isle de Beauchaine (1747-ap.1792), on peut en déduire qu'il contenait notamment la lettre de chevalier d'Isle datée du 23 août dont Sartine fait mention dans sa réponse du 23 septembre. Concernant le navire, on sait qu'il avait fait un voyage à Saint Pétersbourg en 1776 et qu'il repart en août en direction du Havre. Il a donc fait escale à Elseneur. Sympathique document. [338].
