Printed in black and white on piece of paper approximately 24.5 x 27.5 cm. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, small closed tear, . From his series of 'English Portraits' (1898). A facsimile of Rothenstein's initials and his dating are in the bottom left-hand corner of the engraving ('W. x R 97'), with Way's slug in the bottom right-hand corner. Fine representation of Hardy, staring warily at the viewer with hands in pockets. Rothenstein's twenty-four 'English Portraits' were published by Grant Richards in an edition of 750, issued in twelve parts of two lithographs each, but many sets were destroyed by a fire at the binders, and only a small proportion of that number appeared. 1p, 8vo. Text clear and complete, on heavily chipped and worn thin paper, with loss to extremities. An unusual and revealing letter, in which Rothenstein gives his own jokey suggestion of how Horder should approach a biographical entry he has been asked to write, begins: 'My dear Horder of course you will do it! "Mr W. R. whose portraits never fail to give dissatisfaction to his sitters, was expelled from The Slade School in 1889, whence he went to Paris, finding no professor would have anything to do with him, he set up for himself, acquired a personality which enabled him to live in credit for some few years, which, however, will scarcely help him to slow that tide which must carry him off from the field of art. A familiar figure at the café Royal, Mr W. R. has endeared himself to the hearts of many of our London waiters." The letter concludes: 'I could do it, I believe, beautifully myself. When are you going to see me? I go to paint the poet Bridges [i.e. Robert Bridges, poet laureate] this week, but shall be back in Town the week after why not come lunch! Through what trip [sic] door did you disappear the other night?' Valediction: 'Yours always Will Rothenstein'.…

Zustand: Very Good. Mounted, framed and glazed: 550 x 454mm in frame, in mount 330 x 247mm. From the collection of the bookseller George Sims, an aficionado through whose hands many drawings by the artist passed: Sims's catalogue 68 (1967) included numerous portraits "from the Rothenstein family collection", e.g., a pastel drawing of Alice Rothenstein with their daughter Rachel from 1904. "Lady Rothenstein," Sims notes, "(whose beauty compelled the imagination of other artists such as Sickert and Conder) was the subject of some of his finest drawings and paintings." William Rothenstein (1872-1945, Kt 1931) married in 1899 Alice Mary Knewstub (1867-1957), daughter of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's only apprentice, the painter Walter John Knewstub. "For a short time," recorded her Times obituary, "she was on the stage as Alice Kingsley, when she played with Irene Vanbrugh, with Toole, and with Herbert Tree at Her Majesty's. Her father was indignant when Shaw wrote that she was perhaps better known through William Rothenstein's drawings of her than for her gift as an actress. In 1899 she was married to William Rothenstein, Max Beerbohm acting as best man, and shortly afterwards her sister Grace married William Orpen. Of a striking blonde beauty she was drawn and painted by many artists among whom were Legros, Wilson Speer, and Augustus John, and she figured in her husband's well known painting, 'The Doll's House,' at the Tate Gallery. Her qualities of wit and high spirits endeared her to a wide circle of friends, especially writers, including Oscar Wilde and W. H. Hudson, who left her some of his manuscripts." Manchester City Art Gallery has an oil portrait by Rothenstein, dated "1901-13", of Alice standing by a fireplace, showing the same profile; and the National Portrait Gallery an oil, c1913, of Alice standing by another fireplace (showing her other profile) with another of George Sims's favourites, Eric Gill. Signed by Illustrator(s).…
