Many aspects of their work have been extensively published, especially the vivid and dynamic graphics used on posters, books and packaging. But another artistic phenomenon, although of equal importance, is barely documented outside the Soviet Union. A wealth of 'agitprop' ceramics - inspired designs on porcelain, often bearing messages promoting agitation or disseminating propaganda of the new age - still exist: they are now avidly studied by designers and sought by collectors around the world. Surprisingly, many of these fresh, vigorous designs were created on existing porcelain - especially a large stock of blanks from the Imperial Porcelain Factory near Leningrad which survived the events of 1917. Revolutionary Ceramics is the first book devoted entirely to reproducing a selection of the most stunning and significant pieces still in existence, and to considering their importance in the history of Soviet art. Many plates, dishes, teapots, cups and figurines come from the Nicholas Lynn collection in London, considered by experts to be the best private collection of ceramics anywhere in the world. Further examples - of objects as diverse as chess sets and inkstands, as well as cups and plates - come from other important sources, notably the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory and the Russian Museum in Leningrad. After an introduction explaining the historical and cultural background to the subject, the book goes on to illustrate the work of some fifty artists, including such outstanding figures as Sergei Chekhonin, Natalya Danko, Nikolai Suetin and Kazimir Malevich. Lavish colour pictures with explanatory captions trace the development from the earliest propaganda plates with their stark slogans, through the more decorative, celebratory pieces intended either to beautify the home or to earn foreign currency, to, via the increasing use of Suprematist designs, the rise in importance of principles of functionality and economy in the output of the ceramics factories. Complete with detailed biographies of the artists featured and reference charts and pictures identifying signatures, factory marks and monograms, Revolutionary Ceramics is an accessible, lavishly illustrated account of a unique period, and an essential reference for collectors, designers and all connoisseurs of the decorative arts of the twentieth century".
