Zustand: Bon. 1 vol. in-8 (20 x 12.5 cm), XVIII, 503 pp., demi-basane de l'époque, dos lisse orné (frotté), quelques rousseurs, tranches jaspées, cachet à l'encre rouge de la bibliothèque du professeur Jules Cloquet sur 3 feuillets (dont le titre) et envoi autographe signé de Rostan à J. Cloquet sur le faux-titre, bon état. Deuxième édition, revue et augmentée (édition définitive). Rostan y a notamment ajouté de nombreuses observations. Il écrit dans l'avant-propos : "On y trouvera une multitude de faits nouveaux et intéressans que je dois au zèle d'élèves distingués auxquels je me plais à payer ici un juste tribut de reconnaissance. Le lecteur trouvera leur nom à chacune de leurs observations." Certaines de ces observations sont de Foville, Calmeil, Chomel, Pinel-Grandchamp, Delaye, U. Trelat, etc. L'édition originale, fruit de dix années de travail, avait paru en 1820 (elle ne comportait que 282 pages). Dans cet ouvrage remarquable, basé sur la méthode anatomo-clinique, Rostan réalise une étude minutieuse et rigoureuse du ramollissement. Après avoir écrit en 1817 un article princeps sur l'asthme cardiaque (Garrison & Morton, 2744), Rostan donne ici la première description complète du ramollissement, avec ses prodromes et son évolution. Il isole le ramollissement cérébral du cadre de l'apoplexie. Il reconnaît pour la première fois que le ramollissement n'est pas lié en règle générale à l'inflammation, et note le caractère habituellement ossifié des artères du cerveau qu'il rattache aux modifications séniles. Léon Louis Rostan (1790-1866), élève de Pinel à la Salpêtrière, puis médecin des hôpitaux, devint professeur de clinique médicale à la Faculté de médecine de Paris et membre de l'Académie de médecine. Belle provenance : Jules Cloquet (1790-1883), anatomiste et chirurgien, professeur de clinique chirurgicale à la Faculté de médecine de Paris.
