Not dated, but circa 1871. xxxi, 400pp. Red cloth-covered boards with raised titles and gilt and embossed decorations and gold colouring both to the front and spine of book, lovely imprint pattern on the back of book, all edges gilt, bevelled edges, tissue-guarded frontispiece, extra illustrated title page. There is a facsimile of Hood's handwriting as well as numerous small black and white illustrations. 12mo. Some light rubbing and rounding to the corners and spine ends. Some discolouration to the text block spray. Internally hinges cracked and a couple of lightly strained gutters. Gift inscription on label on front free endpaper, in a contemporary hand, and an embossed imprint; a further gift inscription, dated 1871, opposite the half-title. Faint and occasional spotting throughout. Contains a selection of poems by Thomas Hood.

A deluxe edition bound in full cushioned waxed emerald cloth with gilt lettering, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles around golden decorated green endpapers, title page printed in red and black. Attractive head and tail pieces. 12mo. Cloth is a little worn at edges, rubbed through at corners and at ends of a sunned spine, a couple of scuffs on front panel. Hinges cracked, not affecting binding. A little browning on versos of free endpapers, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. A lovely vintage copy, would make super gift for an admirer of Whittier's poetry.

Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish poet and his work is collected in this book by William Michael Rossetti, who was one of the seven founder members of the Pre-Raphaelite. Rossetti also provides a critical memoir of Scott.

This book fulfills the promise Will Rossetti made in his 1895 book that, should it "find favour with the public" then he would dig deeper into his family papers relevant to his brother, Dante Gabriel, and Christina, and others, including original material about John Ruskin. With 15 plates (only one of which is not by Dante Gabriel Rossetti).

Slight soiling to gilt on fore-edge of Volume II.Beautifully printed, with 18 full page illustrations and frontispieces from Rossetti's paintings and drawings. Each is protected by a tissue guard giving the name of the work. It was noted by bibliographer Colbeck that the poem "After the French Liberation of Italy" was being published for the first time. Vellum binding is in very good condition with just the lightest signs of handling. Gilt title and author to spine, and Rossetti's own design of his initials on front cover. Interior is pristine. Bookplate of Frederick William Brown affixed to each front pastedown. Original blue ribbon placemarks present. Housed in modern green cloth slipcase. Volume I: 227 pages; Volume II: 245 pages.
