See images for condition. About the book >.>.> A History of the University of Cambridge, its Colleges, Halls and Public Buildings, was published in two volumes in 1815 by Rudolph Ackermann. Mr John Summerson has paid tribute to this remarkable man in his admirable introduction to The Microcosm of London, published in this series. Born in Saxony in 1764, Ackermann spent ten years of his life practising as a saddler and coachbuilder in various German cities, in Paris and in London, before he set up a print shop in the Strand in 1795. Here he established a lithographic press which was to issue, year after year, an astonishing series of illustrated works. They range from the comprehensive The Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashions, etc., in forty volumes and The World in Miniature in forty-three volumes to the specialized topographical treatises of which this is one. In the previous year Ackermann had brought out his history of the University of Oxford. This had been so great a success that he, always an astute businessman, had immedia.
