"Of the utmost rarity" (Duveen): the first edition of the classic work on Rosicrucian symbolism, all the rarer for all three parts being bound in one volume. Although Rosicrucian literature stretches back into the seventeenth century, Rosicrucianism as a practice emerged in the 1760s, making this volume essential early testimony to the emerging movement that would become foundational for modern European esotericism. - The first part is introduced with the allegorical text "Aureum saeculum redivivum" ("The Golden Age Restored") by Henricus Madathanus, the pseudonym of the seventeenth-century German alchemist Adrian von Mynsicht (1603-38), followed by several detailed and handsomely coloured plates illustrating the mystic principles outlined therein. The second begins with a text "by a still living, but anonymous philosopher", and further plates, on the model of the previous volume. - The third part was published under a different title, although clearly on the model of the previous volumes. The text is attributed to a Rosicrucian brother of the initials P.F., with illustrations by another known as P.S. The plates in this final part are more elaborate and ambitious, and depict the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, with two trunks and roots stretching into two different spheres, with hands reaching out to ripe and to rotten fruits; also depicted is the Mons Philosophorum, or Mountain of Philosophers, showing the crown of wisdom at the peak, guarded by monsters and perils along the way. - Mystic tracts asserting the existence of a brotherhood of Rosicrucians appeared in Europe in the seventeenth century, depicting a movement that blended Kabbalah, Hermeticism, Alchemy and Christian mysticism. Particularly influential was the allegorical romance, "The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz", published by the German theologian Johann Valentin Andreae (1586-1654) in 1616. Although Andreae described the work as a parody and disowned the Rosicrucianism it portrayed, it became widely influential among contemporary alchemists. In the later eighteenth century, actual Rosicrucian brotherhoods began to emerge, and were essential in shaping the European esoteric movements that were founded over the coming years, notably the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. - An extreme rarity: Rare Book Hub lists only two copies of the first editions of Volumes I-II sold since 1985, both lacking the third part, of which only one copy is listed in 2009. - A rare and foundational work of European esoteric thought. - Modern binding in excellent condition. Title of part I mounted, eight further leaves with small restored loss to lower part of inner white margin, last plate and one text-leaf in the final part trimmed and mounted. 8vo (155 x 92mm.) 14,[2(blank)]p., device on title-page, decorative paper wrappers Frankfurt: Johann Bringer, 1616   First edition of this very rare and early Rosicrucian tract known in only four copies, none of which are located outside Germany and the Netherlands. This little tract, dated 3 December 1615, which the author claims, he has been prevented from writing over many years by pressure of business, is addressed to the Rosicrucian brotherhood, quotes frequently from Palingenius Zodiacus vitae, and makes reference to one or two contemporary works, the Chymische Hochzeit published by Zetzner in Strasbourg in 1616, and Julius Sperber (d. 1616) 'de summo huius & futurae vitae thesauro' (an adaptation perhaps of a German title). On p. 12 the author tells us that he is a from a wealthy family, a citizen of a very famous city located on the foremost river of Europe, aged 57, active in the state's business, a widower with several sons, one of whom, now fifteen is a fine linguist (here the tetragrammaton is printed in Hebrew). He further says that his name is taken from the designation of ' grace & peace', but, that if people guess at what it is, he beseeches them not to reveal it.   The work is commonly attributed to Friedrich Grick of Altdorf, but his pseudonym is Eirenaios Agnostos, not the name found in this pamphlet, and he is said to have attacked the Rosicrucians. This attribution seems unlikely given the warm tone towards them here adopted, unless it is meant ironically. If this is by Grick, then it is his earliest work, most of his titles dating from a few years later.
