He studied at the University of Chicago in the late 1950s where he was an editor of the Chicago Review. There he published many Beat writers including Jack Kerouac, Edward Dahlberg, and William Burroughs but he left the Chicago Review in 1959 after the University attempted to censor an issue of the Review. With the disputed material he cofounded a literary review called Big Table, which was charged with obscenity. However, Rosenthal eventually won the case, which Judge Julius Hoffman adjudicated. Rosenthal then moved to New York City where he continued to edit and publish beat writers before moving to San Francisco in 1967 with the intention of setting up his own publishing commune free of censorship. He moved in with Hibiscus, founder of the Cockettes, an avant garde psychedelic hippie theater group, and started the Kaliflower commune and the Free Print Shop. . . The Spring 1958 issue was deemed by Jack Mabley in the Chicago Daily News "one of the foulest collections of printed filth I've seen publicly circulated. " Censorship and controversy caused Rosenthal and others to resign from the Chicago Review and found Big Table where the first issue which saw the U. S. Postal service impound 400 issues. After further adventures in New York and Tangier, he returned to San Francisco, where he was born in 1967 and started what became known as the Kaliflower Commune, based on the principles of other intentional communities such as The Diggers, and the Oneida Community. Rosenthal created the Free Print shop in the basement of the Sutter Street commune as a platform for uncensored, radical, free publishing in the Bay Area. With Pros in Poetry, he threw down the gauntlet against what he now saw as "careerism" among his past colleagues, Ginsberg's egoism in particular. First Edition. A complete run of the Beat literary magazine, founded in response to the suppression for reasons of "obscenity" of The Chicago Review's Winter 1958 issue. These copies have been signed a whopping 33 times by a Who's Who of the contributors and prominent figures associated with the Beat and Black Mountain schools of poetry/lit. From the collection of Joe Lee, who clearly made it his mission to meet the leading lights of the period and get their autographs over a number of years. The first issue is signed by William S. Burroughs (at a lengthy excerpt of his shot across the bow Naked Lunch, poets Robert Creeley and Denise Levertov (on ads at the rear), and folksingers Odetta and Peggy Seeger. The second issue is signed by Allen Ginsberg (dated 11/84), David Meltzer, Amiri Baraka (known as LeRoi Jones at the time; dated 11/98), artist Jules Feiffer, and poet/publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti on the rear wrap. The third issue is signed by poets Ginsberg (dated 6/12/94), Baraka, Creeley, John Ashbery; chronicler of the gay experience John Rechy, Feiffer, and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Norman Mailer. The fourth issue signed by comedian Steve Allen on an ad for his album at the front, Ginsberg (dated 6/12/94), Levertov (on her poem "The Rainwalkers"), Creeley, Diane DiPrima, Meltzer, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Ashbery, and Baraka (dated 11/98). The fifth and final issue signed by Creeley, Ashbery, John Updike, Meltzer, Rechy, and Odetta (dated 3-14 '98). Ted Joans's signature is somewhere in one of these issues too; memory fails which one. All volumes Very Good or slightly better, typical age toning and some light wear, bindings a little strained. A remarkable collection of signatures of major figures in the Beat movement, the folk scene, and the Black Mountain school, with some up-and-coming novelists like Updike and Mailer thrown in; all of which together with Big Table itself really capture the zeitgeist of the late '50s and early '60s. The 1958 appearance of a Naked Lunch excerpt in the Chicago Review created a scandal that ended in the resignation of the magazine's two editors, Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll. The controversy was initiated when an editorial review by Chicago Daily News columnist Jack Mabley appeared under the title 'Filthy Writing on the Midway.' Mabley objected to what he called obscene writing in the University of Chicago's literary magazine. The resulting furor, including the refusal of the U.S. Post Office to mail Paul Carroll's subsequent magazine, Big Table, led to the immediate publication of Naked Lunch by Maurice Girodias of the Paris-based Olympia Press, who had created a similar sensation by publishing Nabokov's Lolita. Published alongside Burroughs in the Chicago Review were Lawrence Ferlinghetti, two letters by Allen Ginsberg that mention Jack Kerouac and Gregory Corso, Jack Kerouac, prose by Philip Whalen, and other young and unconventional writers of the time. Irving Rosenthal went on to write one of the great but unheralded novels of the era, 'Sheeper,' in which Burroughs and the Beats appear.
