Dated 1891 on the title page. No copyright page to be found. 274 pages, followed by a page of advertisements. Good condition. The cloth is worn around the corners and head and foot of the spine. Spots of discoloration to the back cover. A crack along the gutter to the first page, and a few pages within. Binding remains tight and strong, no missing or loose pages. Pages toned. A few short pencilled notes to the endpapers, but no other marks or writing to be found. Overall good condition. This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world.
