An attractive half morocco signed binding by Birdsall, housing photographs of Renaissance works of art to the front, and clippings of the bibliographical works of James S. Dearden to the rear.With Dearden's bookplate to the rear pastedown. He was a Ruskin enthusiast credited with launching the Ruskin revival, and with advising three generations of Ruskin scholars.Pages of text from Dearden, drawn from a number of publications, have been pasted to leaves at the rear. There are seventeen pages from Dearden, with headings such as 'A Dictionary of Presses and Printers', 'Miniature Incunabula', and 'The Care of Book-Bindings'.The front of the work consists of pasted in photographs of paintings and sculptures, each with a handwritten caption.There are ninety photographs of Renaissance art, including ten portraits from Raphael, and examples of works from Titian, Leonardo da Vinci, Corregio, Bernardino Luini, Andrea del Sarto, and many others.It is evident that Dearden commandeered this binding for his own purposes at a later date than its use for images of artworks.
