The preface explains that the scope of the catalogue is limited to "the works especially devoted to the construction and use of the Microscope ; to those treating of Infusoria, Polycystina, the various classes of minute Algae, and other objects which can only be examined by the aid of optical power ; and to such subjeets as Zoophytology, Cryptogamic Botany, or to minute dissections in any department of Natural History, for which the aid of the Microscope is absolutely necessary. A few books have been added as giving the best account of optical instruments, and the most complete list of works on Microscopical subjects, and one as containing the lives of many of the earliest labourers in this field of study.".
