Paperback. Zustand: Good. They survived the "date which will live in infamy. " Now they tell the unofficial story. Many books have been written about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, an unprecedented event that launched the United States into World War II. But here is a rare compilation of eyewitness accounts by those who actually survived the bombing on December 7, 1941. This book is their story. Not the official version from the top brass, but the riveting, clear-as-yesterday accounts of the ordinary soldiers, sailors, airmen, nurses, chaplains, and wives who were at Pearl Harbor, going about their normal lives that fateful Sunday morning. From the burning deck of the Tennessee in the inferno of Battleship Row, from the airfields, from the hospitals, and from the Navy Yard dry docks come the chilling and unforgettable stories of these brave men and women. 314 pages.

Index. Robert Sherman LaForte was Professor Emeritus of history at North Texas University. La Forte joined the history faculty in 1968 and served as chair of the department, retiring in 1998. He established the UNT archives in 1975. La Forte co-wrote several books about World War II - Remembering Pearl Harbor: Eyewitness Accounts by U.S. Military Men and Women, Building the Death Railway: The Ordeal of American POWs in Burma, 1942-45 and With Only the Will to Live: Accounts of Americans in Japanese Prison Camps, 1941-45 - as well as an authorized history of UNT's first 100 years, Down the Corridor of Years: A Centennial History of the University of North Texas in Photographs, 1890-1990. In 1994, he received the 'Fessor Graham Award, which students give to outstanding faculty members. He earned a doctorate from the University of Kansas. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. In fact, 668 Americans - serving on the USS Houston and with the Texas National Guard's Second Battalion - worked alongside the other Allied troops in the jungle camps. In 'Building the Death Railway', their story is told for the first time. In 22 interviews with American survivors, we learn the details of their lengthy ordeal. Disease, punishment, camaraderie, work conditions and attempts to escape are described by the men who were there. The story begins with their capture and ends with their liberation 42 months later. The Burma-Thailand 'Death Railway' was one of the most horrible sentences a prisoner of war could endure. Thousands died in the jungles of Burma. More than 130 Americans - one man in five - never returned home, victims of neglect, abuse, starvation and disease. 'Building the Death Railway' gives the American perspective on events that shocked the world.

In this title, Ronald E. Marcello uses oral history interviews with civilians and veterans to explore how the citizens of Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, responded to the war effort. Interviews with citizens and veterans are organized in sections on the home front; the North African-Italian, European, and Pacific theatres; stateside military service; and occupation in Germany.
